KING’S HEAD A LEAD NEWPORT
POOL LEAGUE AT CHRISTMAS

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Horns Gnosall B beat the Barley Mow 4-2 but King’s Head A lead the Newport & District Pool League at the Christmas break after thrashing the Royal Navy Club in a tense seventh match of the season on Wednesday night.

King’s Head A top the table on frame difference after their victory at the Royal Navy Club. Graham Tigwell put the visitors in front and Ross Goodchild rode his luck to make it 0-2. Wins for Phil Emery and Eddie Keenan over Alan Pritchett and Jez Price sealed the points for the Chetwynd End side and Irene Whittington joined the pre-Christmas party in the fifth frame to confirm the rout.

Horns Gnosall B’s George Allen got the better of Antony Winfield to put the away side in front, but Martin Porter skittled Newport Open Champion Neil Dale to level the score. Colin Pink edged the visitors in front against Billy Holland, but Ray Talbot dug deep to beat Mick Manning and level the match.

Gnosall skipper Dean Smith dropped himself from the doubles racks for fear of dropping points and his playing quartet did the business with Allen and Manning sealing all three points in a tense sixth frame against Winfield and Kim Wan Loi.

NRBL B were forced to come from 3-1 down to rescue a point against Junction B in Norbury and are tied with Horns B. Rob Holt put the league leaders on the offensive, but quick-fire winning salvos from Steve Till, Richard Morris and Mick Ashforth against Simon Walley and Luke and Mike Jones stunned the Newport side. Jack Jones and Liam Matthews rescued the fifth frame for the visitors and Mike Jones teamed up with Walley to seal a brave draw in the final rack.

NRBL A made light work of beating Junction A without the loss of a single frame. Jason Taphouse, Wayne Dodd, Antony Heathcote and Andy Miles did the damage in the singles racks against Hyla Marklew, Steve Roycroft, Sion Richards and Keith Rogers and skipper Mick Beech joined the party in the fifth frame as the defending champions sealed a comfortable win.

Shakespeare B visited the Navigation in Gnosall and honours were shared in a tense game. Russ Woodhouse gave the away side the lead, but Neil Holford, Steve Whitlock and Scott Smith beat Darren Lowe, Lauren Heathcote and Kim Rigby to push the Staffordshire side into a 3-1 lead. Jane and Jess Hilditch joined the away line-up in the doubles and teamed up with Lowe and Woodhouse to seal an unlikely draw with two frame wins.

Pointless King’s Head B stunned LSC at the Tav at Chetwynd End. Greg Heathcote put the away side into the lead, but Ian Perry edged a rack against Ben Longstaff to level the score. Paul Trevor again put the visitors into the lead only for Lorna Phee to pip Ian Roberts and send the match into the doubles with the score deadlocked. Heathcote and Roberts won the first four-player encounter, but Lucy Hennessey and Phee played superbly to silence Longstaff and Trevor and seal an unlikely draw.

Tibberton’s Sutherland Arms visited Shakespeare A fresh from winning their re-arranged match against Horns A, 4-2, on Monday night but they were on the receiving end of a fine Shakespeare performance.

Neil Perkins and Andy Potter won two tight frames against Matt Mansell and Kevin Moore to set the home side up nicely and Ross Richards-Jones came back from six balls down to beat Colin Smith and make it 3-0. Jack Hooper gave the Tibberton side a lifeline in a tense black-ball fourth rack against Ben Holmes, but Potter cleared well to seal the points in frame five and Richards-Jones held his nerve in a tight sixth frame to give the home side a comfortable first league win of the season.

The Railway Tavern entertained the Wheatsheaf at Upper Bar and won the match by the odd frame with Dave Bristow again in fine form for the home side. Horns A and the Haberdashers played out a bottom-of-the-table clash in Gnosall and the Knighton side snatched the first two points of the season with a 2-4 win.

There will be a Christmas pool killer competition organised by Greg Heathcote at the Railway Tavern on Sunday, December 23rd from 18.30hrs. Entry is £5 and names will be placed in a hat and cash prizes will be paid out to the top three.

The Newport Pool League resumes on Wednesday, January 2nd, 2013.
