NRBL B RETURN TO THE DIZZY HEIGHTS OF POOL LEAGUE SUMMIT

NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL B scraped through with a 4-2 victory over the Railway Tavern and returned to the summit of the 2012/2013 Newport & District Pool League after the sixth week of matches on Wednesday night.

Rob Holt put the home side in the driving seat against Adam Stone, but Jack and Mike Jones fell to Stu Morrey and Jason Lloyd, as the Tavern tipped the balance in their favour. Luke Jones stunned Greg Quinn to level the score and the home side won both doubles racks, with a ‘dropped’ Simon Walley joining the fray with Liam Matthews in rack six to seal the match.

Horns B have opted not to switch home matches to the Honeysuckle in Newport and they were rewarded with a tense 4-2 victory over neighbours, the Navigation.

Dean Smith and Newport open champion Neil Dale put the home team in the driving seat, but Neil Holford got the better of Mick Manning and George Allen was fortunate to beat Scott Smith to make it 3-1. Manning and Allen sealed the points for the Horns in rack five, but the visitors prevailed in the final frame with Holford again showing promise.

King’s Head A maintained their impressive start to the season with a comfortable victory over winless Haberdashers. Graham Tigwell, Ross Goodchild and Ed Keenan did the damage in the first three racks, but James Morris got the better of Mick Collins to give the villagers hope. Tigwell played well in the first of the doubles racks to seal the points for the home side.

Junction A prevailed against their B team in the all-Norbury clash with the loss of just one frame and the Barley Mow came away with all three points after a 1-5 victory at the Royal Navy Club, with James Boyd and Ray Talbot playing well for the visitors.

Shakespeare B kept up their impressive start to the season with a 4-2 win over King’s Head B at Upper Bar. Maggie O’Brien played well to beat Lauren Heathcote in frame one, but stand-in player Dan O’Connor stunned Bob Perry in rack two to level the match. Chris Perry got the better of Jess Hilditch and the visitors edged in front, but Darren Lowe led the comeback against Lyn Day in rack four and the home team won both doubles racks to seal the points.

The Wheatsheaf hosted Shakespeare A and honours were shared in a strange game. Neil Perkins won a defensive tussle against Nigel Sandbrook to put the away side ahead and a Mark Hodgkinson tantrum gifted Andy Potter the second frame.

Paul Skitt hit back to beat Ben Holmes to make it 1-2, only for Dave Marshall to strike gold in rack four and put the Shake in control. When Ross Richard-Jones missed a straight black into the middle and Perkins missed another tricky effort soon afterwards, Sandbrook gave the home side a lifeline and the draw was sealed in rack six when poor Potter sunk the black by mistake on his penultimate visit with his opponents out of the equation with six balls still on the table,

A lack of players forced NRBL A to postpone their crunch clash with LSC at the Tav and this means that the game needs to be rescheduled before Boxing Day, otherwise LSC will be granted the win. The match between Tibberton’s Sutherland Arms and Horns A was also postponed and the same rule stands.
