LOWE POINT FOR OUTRIGHT LEAGUE LEADERS LEGION A

NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL A snatched the outright lead in the 2012/2013 Newport & District Pool League on frame difference with a tense 4-2 victory over Shakespeare B in the fifth round of matches on Wednesday night.

Skipper Mick Beech kept up his impressive run by beating Russ Woodhouse and Andy Miles and Wayne Dodd made it 3-0 to the defending champions with wins over Lauren Heathcote and Jess Hilditch, But former open champion Antony Heathcote suffered a bitter defeat against Darren Lowe, as the visitors maintained a lifeline. Dodd and Miles sealed the match in rack five but Lowe and Jane Hilditch stunned Beech and a shell-shocked Heathcote in the final frame.

Former league leaders, NRBL B, visited the under-performing Shakespeare A and were held to a 3-3 draw. Neil Perkins rode his luck twice to pip Simon Walley and put the home side ahead, but Mike Jones squeezed passed Andy Potter to level the match. Landlord Ben Holmes won a scrappy frame to make it 2-1 to the home side against Jack Jones and then Rob Holt levelled the match against Ross Richards-Jones.

Perkins and new signing Marcus Thomas were in control of rack five until Perkins left a snooker ‘short’ to gift the penultimate rack to Holt, but Potter dug deep to seal a deserved draw for the home side in the final frame against Walley and Luke Jones.

Horns B thrashed King’s Head B at Chetwynd End to remain unbeaten and fourth in the league. Market Drayton’s George Allen and Mick Manning put the away side into the lead, but Ian Perry silenced Will Edge to give the home side hope. Neil Dale sealed at least a draw for the visitors and Dean Smith joined forces with Dale to clinch the match in rack five, with Allen and Manning confirming the three points in the final frame.

King’s Head A faced a tricky visit to the Barley Mow and honours were shared in a tight encounter. Graham Tigwell beat Gary Bolton to get the away side off to a good start and Mick Collins extended the lead at the expense of Antony Winfield.

But the Barley hit back with Martin Porter disposing of Ross Goodchild and Eddy Keenan succumbing to Ray Talbot. Honours were shared in the doubles, with Talbot and Winfield sealing a point for the home side after Irene Whittington and Phil Emery had beaten Kim Wan Loi and Billy Holland in rack five.

LSC at the Tav maintained their unbeaten run with a 5-1 win away at lowly Junction B, with Greg Heathcote and Paul Trevor playing well in the singles frames. Debutant and new signing John Williams potted a sensational ball in his doubles rack to seal all three points for the visitors.

The Sutherland Arms bounced back from last week’s defeat with a 5-1 win at the Haberdashers in Knighton and Junction A snatched all three points at the Railway Tavern with a 4-2 victory, Greg Quinn restoring some pride for the home team with a useful clearance in the final frame.

The Navigation got the better of the Royal Navy Club in Gnosall with the loss of one frame and honours were shared between the Horns A and the Wheatsheaf in a bottom-of-the-table clash in Gnosall.

Please note that team registration and league fees of £50 must be paid this week. Failure to do so will mean points will not be added to league tables after this date. You have all had five weeks’ notice so no excuses please
