HONOURS SHARES IN CLASH OF THE
NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE TITANS

NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL A and Horns B shared the spoils in a thrilling clash of the top two reputed teams in the 2012/2013 Newport & District Pool League after the fourth Wednesday of league matches.

Newport’s Andy Miles set the away side on their way against Market Drayton’s Mick Manning, but Newport open champion Neil Dale levelled the match with a win over Wayne Dood and Colin Pink snatched the frame against Darren Pountney to put the home side 2-1 up. Antony Heathcote levelled the score by beating George Allen and honours and the spoils were shared in the doubles racks, with both skippers Mick Beech and Dean Smith dropping themselves for the match!

NRBL B continued their impressive unbeaten start to the season with a 4-2 victory over Horns A in Newport, Jack Jones and Simon Walley dining out on the fact that the Legion B side had reached the dizzy heights of the league pinnacle after four matches. They face a punishing test against Shakespeare A on Wednesday.

LSC at the Tavern faced a tricky local derby match against the Railway Tavern at Upper Bar and they were held to a draw by the ‘away’ side. Greg Heathcote and Paul Cartledge put LSC into a 2-0 lead against Adam Stone and John Auliffe and LSC appeared to be coasting.

But Ben Longstaff and Paul Trevor were stunned by Russ Porter and Greg Quinn and it took a comeback by Longstaff and Trevor in the final frame to cover the blushes for the ‘supposed’ pre-season title contenders.

Junction A hosted Shakespeare A at Norbury and honours were shared in a tense match. Neil Perkins and Dave Marshall put the visitors into a deserved 2-0 lead, only for Steve Roycroft and Keith Rogers to level the match in the next two frames. Perkins missed a tricky double on the black to win the match for the visitors in frame five and Rogers stepped up to put the home side in the driving seat, but Marshall and Potter held their nerve in the final frame to seal the draw.

King’s Head A hosted Tibberton’s Sutherland Arms and thrashed the visitors. Graham Tigwell, Ross Goodchild and Mick Collins stormed into a 3-0 lead, but Trevor Smith clawed a frame back against Irene Whittington. Ed Keenan and Phil Emery joined the fray in the doubles to seal the three points against Tom Fisken and Jack Hooper and Goodchild and Tigwell sealed the rout in the final frame.

Shakespeare B continued their stunning start to the season against Junction B with a closely fought 3-3 draw. Jess Hilditch and Lauren Heathcote flew the flag for the Shake B team, but Russ Woodhouse came unstuck in the singles.

The Barley Mow claimed their third victory of the year with a 4-2 win over Gnosall’s Navigation. Winnie Winfield and Martin Porter hit form to see off the visitors, but there were woeful performances by Ray Talbot, Ashley Vaughan and Kim Wan Loi.

The Wheatsheaf pipped the Haberdashers by the odd frame and honours went to the Royal Navy Club in the bottom-of-the-table clash against King’s Head B.

Please note that team registration and league fees of £50 must be paid by the end of November. Failure to do so will mean points will not be added to league tables after this date.
