KING’S HEAD, NRBL TEAMS AND LSC STAY

UNBEATEN IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Kings Head A, NRBL A and B and LSC at the Tavern maintained their 100% starts to the 2012/2013 Newport & District Pool League after the second Wednesday of league matches.

League champions NRBL A moved into second place after demolishing the Barley Mow at a raucous Newport town venue. Despite the distraction of hundreds of drunken students, Mick Beech made sure Gary Bolton never potted a ball and Andy Miles, Wayne Dodd and Ant Heathcote followed up in the subsequent singles frames to pulverise the newcomers. Wins in the doubles racks added to the Barley’s misery.

King’s Head A stole top spot on alphabetical order after strolling passed the Wheatsheaf. Graham Tigwell, Mick Collins, Irene Whittington and Ross Goodchild did the damage in the singles racks against Mark Hodgkinson, Al Harvey, Paul Skitt and Nigel Sandbrook and the visitors also lost both singles racks.

Simon Walley’s win over Trevor Smith set NRBL B on their way to a 4-2 win over NRBL B. Rob Holt made it 2-0, only for Kevin Moore to pull a frame back for the visitors against Mike Jones. Liam Matthews made it 3-1 against Matt Mansell and the home side won both doubles frames to move up to third in the table.

LSC crept into fourth place and remain unbeaten after edging a tight match against Horns A. Greg Heathcote sailed through his match with Jake Anstey after the Gnosall numpty potted the black early on and Paul Cartledge made it 2-0. Steve Bullock pulled a frame back against Ben Longstaff, but Paul Trevor confirmed at least a point for the home side, despite the fact that Dai Smith and Ansty prevailed in frame five.

Honours were shared in the clash between pre-season title favourites Horns B and the Railway Tavern. George Allen cleared off the break to stun Russ Porter and Mick Manning made it 2-0, but the away side hit back. Stu Morrey pipped Newport open champion Neil Dale, but Colin Pink made it 3-1 to the home side against Gregg Quinn.

The Horns capitulated from then on and Morrey, Porter, Dave Bristow and Quinn dug deep to win both the doubles racks and seal an unlikely draw, with home skipper Dean Smith and partner Will Edge left smouldering and under pressure at the finish.

Honours were shared in the local derby clash between the two Shakespeare sides. Russ Woodhouse and Kim Rigby scored home wins for the B side to equalise A team singles successes for Ben Holmes and Neil Perkins, but honours were shared in the doubles racks in a tight match.

Elsewhere, the Royal Navy Club drew 3-3 with Junction B, Gnosall’s Navigation pipped the King’s Head B by the odd frame and Junction A thrashed the Haberdashers in Knighton.

Please note that team registration and league fees of £50 per team must be paid by the end of November. Failure to do so will mean points will not be added to league tables after this date.
