NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE DRAWS TO

A CLOSE WITH NRBL A AS CHAMPIONS

NEWPORT (Shropshire): League champions, NRBL A, completed their Newport & District Pool programme with a convincing 6-0 victory over the Royal Navy Club. It meant that Mick Beech’s Legion team won 150 of the 180 frames played during the season and lost just two of their 30 matches since last November.

Mick Beech, Jason Taphouse, Wayne Dodd and Ant Heathcote did the damage against Dennis Holland, Jez Price, Gerry Nunn and Mark Kijuk and the doubles frames went in favour of the champions as well.

LSC at the Tav claimed a stunning 5-1 victory in their derby game with the Railway Tavern and also finished the year with just two defeats, but too many draws pushed them behind the Legion in the run in to the end of the year.

Greg Heathcote rode his luck to pip Adam Stone, Andy Miles beat Jon Auliffe on the black, Neil Perkins edged a frame against an out-of-sorts Greg Quinn, but Stu Morrey pipped Ian Roberts to give the ‘away’ side hope. The LSC quartet was not to be denied, however, and Heathcote sealed the win with a useful clearance in frame five.

King’s Head A earned three points with a final evening 5-1 victory over the Gnosall’s Horns at Chetwynd End.

Junction A confirmed fourth in the final league table by beating Gnosall’s Navigation with the loss of just one frame. Hyla Marklew beat Geoff Arrowsmith and Keith Rogers seven-balled Brian Kinnersley to make it 0-2. Steve Roycroft and Gordon Sidebottom confirmed the win with frame successes over N. Holdford and Scott Smith, but the away side won a consolation doubles frame.

Victory over Junction B in Tibberton by a 5-1 score line ensured that last year’s runners-up, the Sutherland Arms, finished the year in fifth position.

The Shakespeare rounded off the top six, despite ending the season with a 3-3 draw with the Newport Arms Hotel. Andy Potter got the better of Sam Frost to make it 0-1 at Lower Bar, only for Dave Marshall to pot the black and the white at the same time to gift the second frame to Lauren Heathcote.

Jess Hilditch and Kim Rigby stunned Laura Brennan and Ben Holmes to make it 3-1 to the home side on a suspect cloth, but Dean Smith and Ross Richards-Jones joined the fray in the doubles to rescue a point for the visitors.

The Wheatsheaf entertained NRBL B in a mid-table clash, with honours falling to the visitors, 2-4, despite a stalwart performance from Newport Open favourite Simon Walley.

The match between the Plough at Woodseaves and King’s Head B will take place tonight (Friday).

The 2012-2013 Newport & District Pool League will start on Wednesday, November 7th. Existing teams are requested to confirm their entry into the new league by no later than August 31st, as a reserve list is now in operation. The league will retain a 16-team format next year.
