LSC AT THE TAV CONFIRM SECOND

POSITION WITH HELP OF A SPIDER

NEWPORT (Shropshire): LSC at the Tav needed three points against Junction B to be sure of confirming second place in the Newport & District Pool League with one match still to play and they also needed a spider to come to their rescue in a tense match at Norbury.

Al Caponesta potted both the yellow and the black to hand Greg Heathcote a win in a gripping first frame and Andy Miles survived a major scare against Dave Owen to make it 0-2 to the away side. Stu Till missed a crucial snooker to put Neil Perkins under severe pressure in frame three and the LSC player tapped the black in to make it 0-3.

But Junction B were not to be denied and Ryan Morris played well to pull a frame back against Ian Roberts. With the league runners-up spot at stake, Perkins and Heathcote managed to hold their nerve to clinch the match against Mick Ashforth and Steve Blakemore in rack five with Perkins opting to use the spider rather than risk fouling the final black in what would have been the ultimate humiliation. Morris and Caponesta played well in rack six to pull a consolation frame back for the Staffordshire side.

Champions NRBL A concluded their away matches in the Newport & District Pool League with a comfortable 6-0 victory at the Navigation in Gnosall. Wayne Dodd, Colin Farge, Mick Beech and Ant Heathcote did the damage in the singles and the Gnosall side had no way back.

King’s Head A continued their strong finish to the season with a 5-1 victory at the Royal Navy Club, but it was not enough to stop LSC claiming the runner-up spot.

NRBL B hosted the Sutherland Arms and honours were shared between two under-achieving sides. Luke Jones put the home team into the lead against Gary Bolton, only for Matt Mansell and Jack Hooper to beat Dave Haynes and Liam Matthews to make it 1-2. Mike Jones levelled the match with victory over Colin Smith and honours were shared in the doubles.

Railway Tavern faced a tricky home encounter against Junction A and the visitors came away with all three points after a stunning 1-5 win. The Plough at Woodseaves travelled to the Shakespeare and honours were shared in that match as well.

Gnosall’s Horns entertained the girls from the Newport Arms Hotel and the match ended all square after an excellent performance by the ladies’ side.

King’s Head B drew 3-3 with the Wheatsheaf in the final match of the night, with Nigel Sandbrook losing to birthday girl Lucy Hennessey and Simon Walley on fine form to win his singles frame and to ‘seven-ball’ LSC fledgling Andy Miles later in the evening.

Please be reminded that entries for the Danfords Motor Auctions Newport Pool Open, Railway Tavern Newport Ladies Open and Shakespeare Newport Doubles Open close on Sunday (July 8th).

The draw will take place at the Railway Tavern at 20.00hrs on Monday, July 9th, but people who have not paid their entries will not be included in the draw.
