NRBL A WITHIN TOUCHING DISTANCE OF MICK BEECH’S DREAM

NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL A moved to within two points of claiming the Newport & District Pool League title with another emphatic 6-0 win over NRBL B at Newport Legion on Wednesday night.

Two points from their remaining four games will be sufficient for NRBL A to claim the title after LSC at the Tav were held to a 3-3 draw by the Shakespeare at Upper Bar. Wayne Dodd, Antony Heathcote, Mick Beech and Colin Pink did the damage in the singles, as the Legion strolled towards their success.

LSC were pegged back by a determined Shakespeare side in an unfortunate atmosphere at the Railway Tavern. Greg Heathcote managed to squeeze passed Dean Smith to make it 1-0, but Andy Potter and Ben Holmes made it 1-2 to the away side in two tense and closely-fought frames. Ian Roberts redressed the balance to level the scores in frame four and honours were shared in the doubles racks.

King’s Head A kept up the pressure for second place with a convincing 4-2 win over Junction B at Chetwynd End. Mick Collins and Irene Whittington made it 2-0 to the home side, but Graham Tigwell and Jamie James lost their matches as the Norbury side levelled the score. But the defending league champions won both doubles racks to claim all three points and move to within two points of LSC with four games remaining.

Tibberton’s Sutherland Arms earned all three points with a 5-1 win over the Plough at Woodseaves and maintained fourth place. Junction A also kept up their challenge for fourth with a 4-2 win over King’s Head B in Norbury.

Newport Arms Hotel hosted the Wheatsheaf at Lower Bar and the visitors came away with all three points. Simon Walley, Paul Skitt and Nigel Sandbrook made it 0-3 to the away side before Kim Rigby pegged Al Harvey back to make it 1-3. Honours were shared in the doubles with Rigby and Sam Frost getting their names on the ‘W’ list at the expense of Skitt and Sandbrook.

The Royal Navy Club were humiliated, 0-6, by Gnosall’s Navigation and the Railway Tavern edged the final match of the night against the Horns in Gnosall with the loss of one frame.
