NRBL A PLOUGH THROUGH WOODSEAVES’ POOL CHALLENGE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL A continued their march towards the Newport & District Pool League title with an emphatic 6-0 victory over the Plough in Woodseaves.
Colin Farge enjoyed an element of good fortune to dispose of Kirk Robinson and Mick Beech overcame his football dejection to crush Vicky Winter. It was 2-0 to the home side. Wayne Dodd and Antony Heathcote sealed the win in the next two frames and the quartet prevailed in the doubles racks as well.
LSC at the Tav faced a tricky clash against the Sutherland Arms in Tibberton with home skipper Tom Fisken promising a hostile reception for the visitors. The fading league challengers were not disappointed and Gary Bolton got the home side off to a winning start with a tight frame win against Greg Heathcote.
Jack Hooper was silenced by Andy Miles in rack two as the LSC player levelled the score, but Tom Fisken took full advantage of a Neil Perkins foul to seal a useful six-ball clearance to make it 2-1.
Colin Smith won a tense fourth frame against Ian Roberts to put the home side in sight of the win, but Hooper’s premature victorious chants were silenced in rack five when he fouled off the break and Heathcote cleared every ball to make it 3-2. Miles and Roberts bonded well in rack six to snatch the deserved draw for the away side at the ‘Galatasaray’ of the pool league.
King’s Head A edged ever closer to the top two with a hard-earned 2-4 victory over the Shakespeare at Upper Bar. Graham Tigwell pipped Dan Brennan in a tight first frame but Jamie James failed in a heated exchange with Dean Smith, who levelled the match.
Councillor Ian Perry climbed out of his St. Andrews’ depression to beat Andy Potter and Irene Whittington potted a stunning black against Ben Holmes to make it 1-3. The doubles’ racks were shared, with Tigwell and Whittington sealing all three points for the King’s Head in frame five.
The Railway Tavern kick-started their failing season with a 5-1 win over the Newport Arms Hotel. Stu Morrey, Dave Bristow, Adam Stone and Greg Quinn did the damage in the singles’ frames, although Lauren Heathcote and Jane Hilditch beat Morrey and Quinn to put the visitors on the score sheet in frame five.
The Wheatsheaf hosted the Junction A with the Norbury side desperate to return to winning ways after two defeats. The visitors prevailed with a 2-4 win. “All close frames to be fair and no-one sloped off to the cinema this week,” quipped Wheatsheaf spokesman Paul Skitt.
Junction B entertained the Navigation in an all-Staffordshire clash at Norbury and the visitors were on fine form to confirm a 0-6 win. Meanwhile, NRBL B survived their banana skin encounter against the Royal Navy Club to deliver a similar whitewash scoreline.
Gnosall’s Horns continued their recent good form with a 1-5 victory at King’s Head B. Jake Anstey, Welsh leg end Dai Smith, Steve Bullock and Charles Minors confirmed the win in the singles’ racks, but Lorna McPhee and Lucy Hennessey pulled the final frame out of the fire for the visiting team.
