NRBL A PULL CLEAR AS KING’S HEAD HOLD LSC AT THE TAVERN

NEWPORT (Shropshire): NRBL A emphasised their Newport & District Pool League title credentials with an emphatic demolition of the Junction A on a night when the defending champions, King’s Head A, held the Legion’s title rivals, LSC at the Tav, to a 3-3 draw.

The home side switched their playing order against NRBL A, but Antony Heathcote got the better of Hyla Marklew to make it 0-1 and Colin Pink doubled the score against Keith Rogers nonetheless. Wayne Dodd stunned Steve Roycroft to make it 0-3 and Jason Taphouse snatched frame four at the expense of Gordon Sidebottom to seal all three points in the singles frames. There was no way back from then on and the Legion won both doubles racks to confirm the rout.

LSC at the Tav faced a true test of their title pedigree against the in-form defending champions, King’s Head A. Graham Tigwell put the visitors into a one-frame lead against Greg Heathcote, only for Ian Roberts to level the match against Irene Whittington.

With the contest finely balanced, former Newport Open Champion Mick Collins missed a crucial black to take out Andy Miles and the home player took advantage to seal the frame to make it 2-1. Neil Perkins managed to turn around a tense fourth frame against Phil Emery with a useful five-ball clearance to make it 3-1. But the visitors were not to be denied. Ian Perry and Emery won rack five and Tigwell played well in rack six to capitalise on a Miles error to seal the draw.

NRBL B picked up three much needed points with a 4-2 victory over Newport Arms Hotel. Mike and Luke Jones made it 2-0 with wins over Lauren Heathcote and Jane Hilditch, but Jess Hilditch left Jack Jones completely shell-shocked in rack three. Liam Matthews sealed at least a draw for the home side at the expense of Kim Rigby in frame four and honours were shared in the doubles frames.

The Wheatsheaf survived a banana skin encounter against the Royal Navy Club at Chetwynd Aston. Al Harvey beat Dennis Holland to set the ‘hillbillies’ on their way, but the in-form Alan Pritchett sent Simon Walley packing to level the match in rack two.

Nigel Sandbrook’s win over Gerry Nunn and Mark Hodgkinson’s triumph against Mark Kujuk sealed at least a draw for the home side, but Hodgkinson and Walley made life difficult by losing to Nunn and Pritchett. It took a last gasp effort by Paul Skitt and Sandbrook to left-foot Kijuk and Holland to seal all three points.

The Sutherland Arms continued to close on the leaders with a 4-2 win over Gnosall’s Horns, while the Plough hosted the Navigation in an all-Staffordshire clash in Woodseaves and honours were shared between the two sides.

The King’s Head B entertained Junction B in Newport, but the result was not available as we closed for press.

The game between the Shakespeare and the Railway Tavern will be played alongside the rearranged match involving LSC and the Royal Navy Club next Wednesday.
