SUTHY PIP LSC AT THE TAV TO THE

TOP OF NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Tibberton’s Sutherland Arms are the early leaders of the 2011-2012 Newport & District Pool League after their 0-6 demolition of Gnosall’s Navigation on Wednesday night.

The village side deprived LSC at the Tav of the bragging rights for being top of the league after failing to concede a single frame to the Staffordshire side. Skipper Tom Fisken, Gary Bolton, Jack Hooper and Colin Smith did the damage in the singles and the quartet prevailed in the doubles racks as well to seal a perfect start to the league season.

LSC at the Tav were made to work harder for a 1-5 victory at the Royal Navy Club. Ian Roberts won a black ball game against Jez Price to put the visitors in front and Greg Heathcote benefited from Dennis Holland’s premature potting of the black to give the under-achievers a good start. But Gerry Nunn stunned Andy Miles with a useful clearance to put the home side back in the game and Neil Perkins rode his luck to beat Alan Pritchett to make it 1-3.

Heathcote and Ben Longstaff sealed three points for the visitors in the fifth frame and Perkins teamed up with Roberts to put the match beyond doubt in rack six.

The titanic clash between former league winners, NRBL A, and defending champions, King’s Head A, went in favour of the visitors at Chetwynd End. Mick Collins put the home side in front against Mick Beech, after the visiting skipper had fouled, but new signing Wayne Dodd and Antony Heathcote beat Graham Tigwell and Irene Whittington to put the visitors in front.

Newport Open champion Colin Pink made it 1-3 to the away side against Jamie James, but Collins and Tigwell beat Pink and Dodd to make it 2-3. Beech and Heathcote teamed up well to pip Whittington and Phil Emery in a marathon, tense final frame to set the league favourites on their way to a winning start.

The Railway Tavern made a winning start to their league campaign against the Wheatsheaf. Greg Quinn beat Nigel Sandbrook to set the home side on their way, only for new record-signing Simon Walley and Al Harvey to swing the tie in the ‘Sheaf’s favour. Stu Morrey restored the balance in rack four by beating Paul Skitt and the home side sealed all three points in the doubles racks, courtesy of Dave Bristow, Morrey, Quinn and Russ Porter.

League newcomers, the Horns at Gnosall, lost 2-4 to the Junction A and the Plough at Woodseaves managed a useful 3-3 draw at Junction B.

Honours were shared in the clash between the Shakespeare A and NRBL B. Andy Potter, Ross Richards-Jones and Dave Marshall pushed the Shake into a stunning 0-3 lead at Upper Bar, but Mike Jones beat Ben Holmes and it was game on. Liam Matthews and Tom Sayce won the first of the doubles racks to make it 2-3 and Mike Jones and Marshall got the better of Jones and Holmes to tie the match.

The Newport Arms Hotel had the bragging rights in the all-girl clash with the King’s Head B. Lauren Heathcote beat Lyn Day to put the home side in front at Lower Bar, but Lorna McPhee redressed the balance in frame two.

Sam Frost pipped Tash Push and Kim Rigby beat Lucy Hennessey to swing the tie in the Newport Arms’s favour. Heathcote and Jane Owen sealed the match in frame five when Hennessey and McPhee fouled, but Pugh and Day prevailed in the final frame when Rigby potted both the white and the black at the same time.

Results should be sent as soon as possible after the match on Wednesday evenings to 07831 123153. Please note that all league fees (£40 per team) must be paid by the end of November or points scored by teams will not count after this date. Clearly marked envelopes can be left for the attention of Neil Perkins at the Railway Tavern.
