NRBL SILENCE THE SUTHY IN HEATED TIBBERTON CLASH
NEWPORT (Shropshire): There was a bitter atmosphere in the top-of-the-table clash between the Sutherland Arms and NRBL in the eighth week of matches in the Newport & District Pool League.
NRBL – the defending champions – prevailed 4-2 but a couple of unsavoury incidents spoiled the contest. Home skipper Tom Fisken lost the first rack to an inspired Colin Farge and Antony Heathcote put the visitors into a 0-2 lead. Colin Pink sparked outrage by punching the air with glee to claim the third rack to guarantee NRBL at least a draw in rack three to the detriment of Jack Hooper, but Wayne Dodd gave the home side hope by putting Mick Beech’s fire out in frame four.
A couple of heated discussions regarding the rules governing doubles matches and advise to players marred the pair of doubles racks. The Tibberton side won the opener, courtesy of Dodd and Mansell, but Heathcote and Farge rekindled the NRBL’s title chances by clinching victory for the visitors in frame six.
The league-leading King’s Head A maintained their current form with a 4-2 win over Wheatsheaf B. Luke Jones stunned the home faithful to put the visitors in front but Graham Tigwell, Ian Perry and Mick Collins guaranteed at least a draw for the top side. Liam Matthews and Jack Jones played well to give the visitors a lifeline, but Tigwell kept his cool to seal the crucial three points for the undefeated home side.
Honours were shared in a 3-3 draw between the Junction A and LSC at the Tav in a match where the away side squandered a 0-3 lead. Ian Roberts, Greg Heathcote and Ben Longstaff put the visitors into the driving seat, but Keith Rogers clawed back a tight fourth rack and Ian Mason supported Rogers to win frame five.
Roberts and Heathcote had their chances to seal the match in the final frame for the Newport team, but Junction skipper Hyla Marklew played well to rescue a point for the Norbury under-achievers.
The Navigation stunned the Railway Tavern at Upper Bar. Greg Quinn put the home team into a 1-0 lead only for Scott Podmore to level the score. Stu Morrey again added to the Tavern’s tally, but Steve Whitlock redressed the balance and a pair of doubles racks wins for the Gnosall side sealed an unlikely win.
Shakespeare C maintained their unbeaten run with a 4-2 victory over Junction B. Ade Darrell set them on their way but Steve Till levelled the scores. Ben Clewes made up for his early evening embarrassment to put the home side back in front and, despite the fact that John Owen won frame four for the visitors, the home side claimed both doubles racks.
In the evening’s two remaining matches, the Wheatsheaf A claimed their first win of the season against the King’s Head B and the Shakespeare A managed to beat the Plough at Woodseaves with the loss of one frame.
“Andy Potter was the one who lost,” quipped Shakespeare skipper Dan Brennan, who switched the Newport team’s home match to the Staffordshire village venue. “His mind was firmly fixed on the big cup game next Tuesday at the Emirates.”
Please remember to send results by text message as soon as possible after the match on Wednesday evenings to 07831 123153. For the record, there are no rules in the Newport & District Pool League governing advice given to players by partners during doubles matches,
