QMSF PREPARES TO HOST GRAND PRIX OF QATAR THIS WEEKEND

· World’s finest F1 drivers arrive in Qatar for Grand Prix spectacle

DOHA (Qatar): The dust hasn’t even settled after last weekend’s successful Oryx Cup UIM World Championship race in Doha Bay, but the Qatar Marine Sports Federation (QMSF) is hard at work again making preparations for this weekend’s Grand Prix of Qatar, the sixth round of the UIM F1 World Championship.

Around 20 of the world’s fastest racers and the world’s fastest single-seater, tunnel-designed boats have arrived in Qatar to prepare for what promises to be a thrilling two days of action on a Doha Bay course planned by staff at the QMSF.

Under the presidency of His Excellency Sheikh Hassan bin Jabor Al-Thani and Khalid Bin Arhama Al-Kuwari, Head of Formula Racing, the QMSF is now firmly at the forefront of UIM world powerboat racing and this weekend’s Grand Prix promised to be a classic spectacle.

Situated near to the Doha Sheraton and to the side of Qatar’s new Knowledge Enrichment Centre, the course is easily accessible for spectators from Doha’s Corniche and officials are hopeful that Friday afternoon’s time trials and the Grand Prix on Saturday will attract the size of spectator numbers which graced the shoreline to watch Dave Villwock and U-96 Spirit of Qatar seal a dramatic win in last Saturday’s Oryx Cup final.

The Qatar Team will also be hoping to bounce back from the disappointment of losing the chance to extend their lead in the UIM F1 World Drivers’ Championship in Shenzhen last month.

Lead driver Jay Price opted to use a new boat in that race and a non-finish means that the 2008 World Champion arrives in Doha for his home round of the UIM series trailing Italy’s Francesco Cantando by 11 points. There are a possible 60 still to play for; 20 in Qatar on Saturday and 20 in both Abu Dhabi and Sharjah next month.

Teams will attend documentation, administration and scrutineering on Thursday (November 25), before official practice and the time trials are staged on Friday and the Grand Prix of Qatar fires into life on Saturday afternoon.
