SUTHERLAND ARMS GO MARCHING ON IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Sutherland Arms at Tibberton cruised into the provisional lead of the 2010/2011 Newport & District Pool League after the second week of matches.

Tom Fiskin’s side finished second overall last season and disposed of the Navy Club at Tibberton, dropping just one frame into the bargain.

Wheatsheaf B were held to a 3-3 draw by the ever-improving King’s Head B side at Chetwynd End, but it could have been so much worse for the league newcomers. Jack Jones potted the black and the white in the first frame to hand the ladies’ an unlikely rack and Luke Jones crumbled in frame two to put the pressure on his team-mates.

Mike Jones restored Wheatsheaf faith in frame three and Tom Sayce managed to level the scores, but the ladies hit back in frame five to earn at least a draw. Jack Jones and Liam Matthews saved the ‘Sheaf’s blushes by clinching the sixth frame to earn themselves a second draw in two weeks.

A woeful table spoiled the match between Lilleshall Sports Centre and the Junction B and honours ended all square. Dave Price collected his first point of the season against R. Morris and Greg Heathcote managed to overcome the vagaries of the cloth to beat Steve Till.

Ben Longstaff was on the wrong end of a comedy of errors against David Owen and Will Dorsett lost a marathon fourth frame encounter against Jon Owen, as the match was level after the singles. Dave Owen and Steve Till disposed of Price and Heathcote to put the visitors within sight of a shock victory, but a slick clearance by Dorsett grabbed a point for the home side after a slick Marcus Thomas had done the donkeywork against Mick Ashforth and Jon Owen.

Mick Collins’s King’s Head A side maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 4-2 victory over Hyla Marklew’s pointless Junction A side at Chetwynd End.

The Railway Tavern struggled to find a fourth player in time for their fixture at the Wheatsheaf, but Stu Morrey’s side came away with all three points to leave the winless Nigel Sandbrook, Paul Skitt, Al Harvey, Ian Trevor and Mark Hodskinson staring at the abyss.

Several teams failed to send their results by text message on time, despite knowing the system and the tight deadline for receiving a speedy report in the newspaper. Please remember to send results by text message as soon as possible after the match on Wednesday evenings to 07831 123153.
