TYPHOON MEGI FORCES RESCHEDULING OF SHENZHEN F1 RACE
· Qatar Team set to race on Sunday on South China Sea
· Super Typhoon Megi wrecks preparations for Shenzhen race
SHENZHEN (China): All the competitive action in the Grand Prix of China, the fifth round of the UIM F1 World Championship, in Shenzhen has been rescheduled for Sunday because of the ongoing risks associated with Typhoon Megi in the South China Sea.
The decision on whether to hold the Shenzhen race was in limbo right until Saturday morning, because of the close proximity of the huge weather system. A meeting between UIM and government officials failed to draw up a final decision on Friday and the decision was made on Saturday morning.
On Thursday evening, Typhoon Megi had been situated 450km east south-east of Hong Kong and moving north. It was expected to dissipate on Saturday morning. Boat containers were moved to higher ground as a precaution in case of surge tides and all personnel were left on a one-hour holding call in case the situation improved.
The race meeting was given the official go-ahead on Saturday morning and a rapid-fire rebuilding and setting-up process took place with all the race action scheduled for Sunday.
In the revised timetable, scrutineering and documentation took place on Saturday with the first free practice planned for 09.00hrs (04.00hrs Doha local time) on Sunday morning. This will be followed by F4 free practice, F4 time trials and the official F1 time trials at 11.45hrs (06.45hrs Qatar time).
There will be one F4 race instead of two from 14.00hrs and the Grand Prix of China will start on the South China Sea course from 16.00hrs (11.00hrs Doha time) on Sunday.
