WHITTINGTON FACES DAY IN FUSION HAIR AND
BEAUTY NEWPORT WOMEN’S POOL OPEN FINAL
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Irene Whittington will face Lyn Day in the inaugural final of the Fusion Hair and Beauty Newport Women’s Open final at the Royal Navy Club, Bellman’s Yard, on Wednesday, October 20th.
The King’s Head’s league-playing pair managed to get the better of Hazel Ford-Lewis and Hannah Evans in two close semi-final matches last week. Whittington won her encounter at Chetwynd End in straight frames, but Evans managed to pinch one frame off Day as the formbook dictated that the two strongest female players in Newport ultimately reached the final.
Hinstock’s Colin Pink and Stafford’s Chris Broomhall were the first two names into the hat for the semi-finals of the 2010 Carling Newport Pool Open.
Former champion Pink was taken to a fifth-frame decider by Newport’s John Williams, but Broomhall upset the form book to beat an out-of-sorts Ben Longstaff in three frames at the Shakespeare in Newport.
Newport’s Mick Collins rode his luck against Whitchurch’s Brian Sumner. Neither player was on top of his game and the match went to a tie-break frame, only for Sumner to suffer the heartbreak of going in-off on the black to send Collins through to the semi-finals.
Defending champion Brendan Ruttledge will have to wait another year to become the only player to win the Newport Open on two occasions. He surged into a 2-0 lead against the run of play but was taken to a fifth-frame decider by Telford’s Luke Hayward.
Hayward, who won last year’s Desert England ‘most improved player’ in the Newport league award, clinched the fifth frame to reach the semi-finals for the first time.
Hayward now faces Pink this week, while Collins faces Broomhall in the second semi-final. Both matches must be played at a neutral Newport venue not normally chosen as a home table location by Monday, October 11th.
