RUTTLEDGE FACES HAYWARD CHALLENGE IN POOL QUARTERS

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The quarter-final draw for the 2010 Carling Newport Pool Open has pitted defending champion Brendan Ruttledge, from Stafford, against Telford’s Luke Hayward.

Former champion Colin Pink will need to overcome Newport snooker player John Williams, while the King’s Head in-form Mick Collins faces Whitchurch’s Brian Sumner and Stafford’s Chris Broomhall will need to beat Newport’s Ben Longstaff in the remaining two quarter-final fixtures.

Shakespeare landlady Hazel Ford-Lewis has drawn hot favourite Irene Whittington away in the semi-final of the 2010 Fusion Hair and Beauty Newport Ladies Open. The Shakespeare’s Hannah Evans and newly-wed Lyn Day (formerly Woodhouse) will showdown in the second semi-final for a place at finals’ night at the Royal Navy Club on Wednesday, October 20th.

Ruttledge and Will Edge won their quarter-final clash in the Worthington’s Newport Doubles Open against Longstaff and Neil Perkins at the Newport Legion on Wednesday night and their reward is a match against defending champions, Colin Pink and Mick Manning, in the first of the doubles semi-finals. The sole-surviving Newport duo squandered numerous chances to oust the Stafford pair in a tense, marathon encounter after they had moved into a 1-0 lead.

Whitchurch’s Cyril Evans and Brian Sumner will play Telford’s Luke and Charlie Hayward in the second semi-final.

Stafford’s Chris Broomhall ended Ed Keenan’s challenge for a place in the last eight of the Carling singles’ competition. The pair reached 2-2 before Broomhall won the all-important fifth frame.

Defending singles champion Brendan Ruttledge also edged into the quarters with a 3-2 victory over Russ Woodhouse in Newport. Longstaff coasted past an out-of-sorts Tavern landlord Ian Roberts in the final third round match at the NRBL last Wednesday night.

Mick Hill, the 2010 World Pool Champion, will be playing at an exhibition evening at the Newport Royal British Legion on Wednesday night (September 22nd). Spectators are welcome and tickets (£10) are still available from Colin Pink (Tel: 07773 479616) for anyone who wants to play the maestro to world rules. There will also be a beer promotion during the evening.
