STAFFORD’S RUTTLEDGE SAFELY INTO POOL ROUND TWO
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Defending Carling Newport Pool Open champion, Brendan Ruttledge, eased safely into round two of this year’s competition with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Telford’s Charlie Hayward.
The Stafford player also teamed up with Will Edge to beat Sam Stewart and Kim Rigby by a similar score line in round one of the Worthington’s Newport Doubles Open. “The girls played very well,” admitted Ruttledge. “They made Will and I really knuckle down and concentrate. Fair play to them.”
Mick Beech started nervously against James Searles and dropped the first frame at the Railway Tavern, but he made a useful clearance in rack two and eventually eased through 3-1 in under an hour. Neil Perkins came from behind twice to pip Colin Farge in a tense, 70-minute safety-dominated match at NRBL.
Former champion Colin Pink dropped one frame in a 3-1 win over Irene Whittington at the King’s Head and Russ Woodhouse stunned Ian Perry with victory by a similar 3-1 score line. Business commitments meant that Cyril Evans was forced to concede his match to Stafford’s Will Edge and Stafford’s Chris Broomhall was taken to a fifth frame decider by Mike Jones in Newport.
Defending Worthington’s Newport Doubles champions, Colin Pink and Mick Manning, beat Ian and Bob Perry 3-1 to reach the quarterfinal stage of the pairs’ competition.
Lyn Woodhouse cruised through to the last six of the Fusion Hair and Beauty Newport Women’s Open with a 3-0 victory over Chris Perry.
All first round games must be completed by Tuesday, August 3rd. Players must settle all tournament entry fees in full by this date. Monies must be left in a clearly marked envelope at the Railway Tavern. Failure to pay all outstanding entry fees will mean immediate expulsion from the tournament.
