DAVE VILLWOCK GIVES U-96 SPIRIT OF QATAR A
STUNNING VICTORY IN DETROIT APBA GOLD CUP

DETRIOT (USA): Dave Villwock powered U-96 Spirit of Qatar to a stunning victory in the 101st Jarvis Restoration Detroit APBA Gold Cup, round two of the H1 Unlimited Hydroplane Championship, on the Detroit River on Sunday.
U-96 Spirit of Qatar is a new sponsorship programme instigated by His Excellency Sheikh Hassan Bin Jabor Al-Thani, President of the Qatar Marine Sports Federation (QMSF), which will host the final round of the H1 Unlimited Championship in November.
Villwock was the class of the field over race weekend in Michigan and duly recorded his 60th career race win and his eighth victory in the Detroit Gold Cup, handing U-96 Spirit of Qatar its first victory in Qatar’s new team colours, despite a delay caused by high winds and inclement water conditions on the Detroit River. Villwork’s eighth Gold Cup success tied the feat achieved by the late Bill Muncey.
“This is unbelievable, to match the number of Gold Cup victories that Bill Muncey won and to be in the club with him and Chip Hanauer (record holder with 11 wins) is really unbelievable,” said Villwock.
Villwock managed to pip J. Michael Kelly and Nate Brown to take victory in a shortened heat 1B on Saturday afternoon with an average lap speed of 152.774 mph. The heat was marred by a crash involving J. W. Myers, who was hospitalised with a broken foot after a collision with the wall in the Peters & May hydroplane.
Villwock repeated the winning feat in heat 2A by getting the better of last week’s winner Steve David with an average lap speed of 152.766 mph. U-96 Spirit of Qatar pipped J. Michael Kelly to the win in heat 3A and completed the clean sweep with a stunning victory over Steve David in heat 4B.
But the U-96 Spirit of Qatar boat dominated the final, leading from the first turn to the to finish, with Steve David sealing second position in Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison. J. Michael Kelly snatched the final podium place and Greg Hopp and Jeff Bernard completed the top five.
U-96 Spirit of Qatar is already fulfilling its goal of putting the State of Qatar on the global map and the race boat was featured on the front page of the Detroit News over race weekend.
The next race is the Lamb Weston Cup on July 23-25 in Kennewick, Washington.
