’HURRICANE’ HASELEY EARNS LSC DRAW AGAINST SUTHERLAND

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The crunch England football match against Slovenia decimated week 27 fixtures in the Newport & District Pool League, but several teams braved their drunken haze on Wednesday evening to fulfil pool commitments.

The highlight of the evening’s matches was a thrilling 3-3 draw between the Lilleshall Sports Centre and the Sutherland Arms at the Railway Tavern. Brain fade by Tom Fiskin enabled Ian Roberts to put LSC 1-0 in front, but Gary Bolton was not to be denied and levelled the scores against an out-of-sorts Marc Simpson in rack two.

Wayne Dodd produced a stunning double on a red and a brilliant three-cushion pot on the black to make it 2-1 to the away side and Matt Mansell prevailed against Ben Longstaff to earn the visitors at least a draw. But the LSC have been riding high recently and maintained a run of one league defeat since Christmas with two stunning performances in the doubles.

Roberts and Longstaff held their nerve to edge rack five for the home side and Neil ‘Hurricane’ Haseley slotted a sensational double to clinch the draw for the home side after Neil Perkins had done the damage earlier in the frame.

The Navigation at Gnosall dropped one frame on the way to a convincing 5-1 victory against the Junction B at Norbury and the Junction A repeated the score line at the Swan with Hyla Marklew’s Staffordshire side continuing their impressive climb towards a top-three finish.

Sion Richards, Steve Roycroft and Keith Rogers set the Norbury side on their way and the trio teamed up with Marklew to seal the three points in the doubles’ frames after the Junction A skipper had blotted his copybook in rack four.

A broken leg for Anthony Winfield and work commitments have meant the Railway Tavern are unable to fulfil their final five fixtures. Affected teams have been granted 4-2 walkover wins after skipper Ben Clewes regrettably confirmed the team’s withdrawal from the league.

The Wheatsheaf were held to a 3-3 draw by Shakespeare B at Chetwynd Aston. Hannah Evans and Sam Frost put the away side into a shock 2-0 lead, but Ian Trevor brought the home team back from the brink in rack three.

Kim Rigby made a mockery of Paul Skitt’s ‘safe and sound’ reputation to earn the ‘gals’ at least a draw, but Nigel Sandbrook, Skitt, Chris Cooper and Oddy Hodgkinson survived the doubles racks to seal an unlikely draw for the shell-shocked home team, who were missing the inspiration of ‘Eric’ – the team mascot.

Please also note that entries for the 2010 Carling Newport Pool Open and the Fusion Hair and Beauty Newport Women’s Open close in less than two weeks time. Players are advised to fill in the forms at their local venues as soon as possible to enable landlords to return entries in good time for the first round draw on Monday, July 5th.
