NRBL STEAM AHEAD IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Newport Royal British Legion (NRBL) extended their lead in the Newport & District Pool League to five points when the Sutherland Arms at Tibberton were held to a 3-3 draw at the King’s Head. Only Mick Beech blotted his copybook in the NRBL’s 5-1 victory over the Wheatsheaf at Chetwynd Aston.

In a dress rehearsal for June’s Neil Clark Memorial Trophy, the Railway Tavern edged a useful 4-2 win over the in-form Junction A. Ray Talbot, Louis Fudge, Anthony Winfield and Ben Clewes set the home side off to a sensational 4-0 start at a raucous Railway with wins over Sion Richards, Steve Roycroft, Ian Mason and Keith Rogers. Victories in both doubles matches restored the Norbury team’s pride, but the cup final promises to be a totally different kettle of fish at the Navy Club on June 2nd.

The Shakespeare A won the battle of the teams fighting for third place with a sensational 5-1 victory over the Navigation at Gnosall. Dave Marshall, Paul Burton, Andy Potter and Dan Brennan won the match in the singles racks and Geoff Arrowsmith’s and Peter Dickinson’s winning response in the first of the doubles frames was too late to stop the Newport side taking all three points.

Following the closure of the Audco Sports & Social Club last weekend, the Audco pool team have switched home matches to the Shakespeare’s second table and will now be known as ‘Audco at the Shake’. Their first match was against Lilleshall Sports Centre and the new home side brought an end to LSC’s run of seven unbeaten matches with a stunning 4-2 win.

Dave Price got the visitors off to the perfect start, but Ross Richards-Jones, Will Dorsett and Matt Tonks pushed the home side into a 3-1 lead. Neil Perkins and Ben Longstaff had an evening to forget in the fifth rack, but that did not detract from a sensational double and some useful potting that earned the home side three points. Price and Mark Simpson – the latter still showing signs of discomfort from his recent groin injury – restored pride for the visitors with victory in the sixth rack.

The all-ladies clash between the Shakespeare B and the King’s Head B ended in a 5-1 victory for the Upper Bar side. Lynn Woodhouse got the visitors off to a winning start, but Hannah Evans, Sam Frost and Hazel Ford-Lewis set the home team on their way. Evans and Ford-Lewis clinched the match with a fifth frame win over Tash Pugh and Woodhouse and Kim Rigby and Frost sealed a marathon sixth frame for the home side to complete the rout.

The New Inn managed to eke out a 4-2 victory at the Navy Club and the Junction B stunned the Swan at Newport with a 4-2 victory in a close encounter at Norbury.

Match results should be sent immediately by text message to 07831 123153. Annual pool fees of £30 must be by Saturday evening at the latest and should be left in a clearly marked envelope with staff at the Railway Tavern.
