SUTHERLAND ARMS MAINTAIN PRESSURE ON NRBL
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Sutherland Arms managed to maintain the pressure on the Newport Royal British Legion (NRBL) after clinching a 5-1 victory over the Wheatsheaf during week 19 fixtures of the Newport & District Pool League.
Gary Bolton, Matt Mansell, Tom Fisken and Wayne Dodd sealed the points in the singles racks, but Nigel Sandbrook and ‘Oddie’ Hodkinson restored some pride for the visitors with a win over Jenny Dandy and Mansell in the first of the doubles racks.
Honours were shared in the clash between the Junction A and the Navigation at Norbury, in a game that could well become the dress rehearsal for the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy final in June.
Sion Richards outsmarted Alan Smart to make it 1-0 to the home side, only for Geoff Arrowsmith to beat Steve Roycroft to level the scores. Ian Mason put the home side in front again and Keith Rogers and Mason made up for Rogers’s defeat in the fourth singles’ match against Steve Whitlock to take the fifth frame and eventually do enough to seal the draw.
The Shakespeare A and the King’s Head A also played out a similar 3-3 score line, despite the fact that the visitors surged into a 0-2 lead at Upper Bar. Mick Collins got the better of the black against Dan Brennan to put the Chetwynd End side ahead and Ian Perry stamped the visitors’ authority on proceedings.
Andy Potter hit back to give the home side hope with a win over Jamie James, but Irene Whittington confirmed at least a draw for the away side with a win over Paul Burton. The Shakespeare hit back with wins in both doubles matches to seal an excellent draw.
The Swan bounced back from a run of shocking form to stun the Railway Tavern at Lower Bar. Tim West overwhelmed Emily MacPherson to give the away side the advantage, but wins for Dan O’Connor and veteran Sean Finney set the home side on their way. Craig Mason levelled the scores with a win over Dan Upton, but MacPherson spearheaded the Swan fight back to seal both doubles racks and claim all three points.
NRBL dropped two frames on their way to a 4-2 victory over the Navy Club, the New Inn saw off the Audco with the loss of just one frame and honours were shared in the clash between the Junction B and the King’ Head B at Chetwynd End.
The Shakespeare B postponed their match at in-form Lilleshall Sports Centre at the 11th hour because of babysitter and boyfriend woes. The postponement gave LSC newcomer Mark Simpson a further opportunity to recover from a niggling groin injury.
There are no official league matches next Wednesday night (April 21st), as attention focuses on the semi-finals of the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy, with the Audco entertaining Junction A at Bellman’s Yard and the Railway Tavern hosting the Navigation at Upper Bar. The final and third-place play-off will take place on Wednesday, June 2nd at the Royal Navy Club.
Match results should be sent immediately by text message to 07831 123153. Annual pool fees of £30 must be by the end of April at the latest and should be left in a clearly marked envelope with staff at the Railway Tavern.
