SHAKESPEARE GIRLS HOLD NEW INN AT UPPER BAR
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Shakespeare B held the New Inn to a 3-3 draw at Upper Bar on a night when both Newport & District Pool League front-runners, Newport Legion and the Sutherland Arms at Tibberton, failed to drop a single frame in their race for the title.
Former Audco player Tom Sayce set the New Inn on their way with a win over Hazel Ford-Lewis, but Kim Rigby and Sam Frost stunned Mick Andrews and Luke Jones to put the home side in with a shout of the win. Hannah Evans edged the fourth frame against Mike Matthews to guarantee the Shakespeare Bside at least a draw, but the New Inn regained their composure in the doubles to snatch a draw.
Newport Legion completed a rout against the failing Audco to maintain their push for the title. Colin Pink, Nigel and Paul Trevor and Mick Beech pushed Ross Richards-Jones, Max Jones, Will Dorsett and Matt Tonks aside and there was no way back for the youngsters in the doubles. Arch title rivals, Sutherland Arms, managed a similar victorious score line at the Navy Club.
Honours were shared in a titanic clash between the Railway Tavern and the Navigation at Newport. Alan Smart put the visitors on the road to glory, but Ben Clewes and Ray Talbot overturned the advantage, only for Steve Whitlock to level the scores. Talbot and Louis Fudge put the Tavern in sight of a useful win, but Navigation landlord Whitlock inspired the Gnosall side to a draw and a vital point.
The Wheatsheaf romped into a 3-0 lead against the Shakespeare A at Chetwynd Aston, courtesy of useful wins for Nigel Sandbrook, Ian Trevor and Al Harvey, but Paul ‘Morrissey’ Burton hit back by beating Paul Skitt and Dave Marshall, Burton, Andy Potter and Richard Young combines well to win both doubles racks and force the draw.
Lilleshall Sports Centre extended their unbeaten run to six games with a marathon 4-2 win over Junction B at Norbury. J. Champ set the home side on their way, but Neil Perkins and Ben Longstaff swung the tie in LSC’s favour.
John Owen ousted Ian Roberts to level the scores, but Mark Simpson bounced back from his groin strain to seal the winning black for the away side in frame five. A marathon final rack looked set for a midnight finish until Roberts slotted a sensational double on the black to send LSC skipper Dave Price into oblivion.
Both King’s Head sides were on the end of 4-2 defeats. The King’s Head A fell at home to the flying Junction A. Sion Richards beat Ian Perry to set the Norbury side on their way, but Mick Collins levelled the scores. Jamie James put the home side 2-1 up, before Keith Rogers beat Irene Whittington to put the emphasis on the doubles racks. The Norbury side triumphed in both frames to continue their stunning rise up the table after a shocking start to the season.
In the final match of the night, the Swan beat the King’s Head B, 4-2. The New Inn were handed a 4-2 victory over the Swan as per the two-week rule in matches being rearranged and NRBL benefited from a similar ruling against Junction B.
