SUTHERLAND ARMS CLOSE THE GAP

ON NRBL IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Sutherland Arms at Tibberton embarrassed Shakespeare B at Upper Bar to claim a 6-0 whitewash victory and ensure that they kept up the pressure on NRBL at the top of the Newport and District Pool League.

Gary Bolton, Matt Mansell, Jon Hooper and Wayne Dodd did the damage in the singles against Hannah Evans, Kim Rigby, Sam Stewart-Frost and Hazel Ford-Lewis and there was no way back for the home side in the doubles racks.

The New Inn stunned the failing Swan at Newport with a useful 4-2 away win. Mike Matthews and Graham Parkinson set the away side on the way, but veteran Sean Finney pulled a frame back for the home side against James Neville. Mick Andrews benefited from Stu Morrey’s misfortune on the black to claim the fourth frame and honours were shared in the doubles frames.

Lilleshall Sports Centre continued their climb away from the foot of the table, despite a woeful display against King’s Head B. Ben Longstaff, Mark Simpson, Neil Perkins and Dave Price somehow sealed the points in the singles racks, but Lyn Woodhouse and Tash Pugh produced some excellent pool to seal the fifth frame and Chris Perry proved that there is justice in the world by snatching the sixth frame for the home side.

Honours were shared in an entertaining clash between the Railway Tavern and the King’s Head A at Upper Bar, but the Wheatsheaf were humiliated by the Navigation at Chetwynd Aston. The Gnosall side won every frame in a 6-0 rout and the Wheatsheaf will be hoping to redress the balance when the teams meet again on Sunday evening.

The Navy Club played a marathon double-header against the Junction A at Norbury and the home side got the better of the first fixture by the odd frame. But the resurgent Junction A did their top three aspirations no harm at all by winning the second match 5-1, in a game that finished late on Wednesday night.

The Shakespeare A beat Audco SC, 5-1, in the final match of the night, the Upper Bar side managing to cope after the loss of team stalwart Sarah Pocock to a new career in the south of England.

In three delayed matches, NRBL, Sutherland Arms and New Inn were handed 4-2 victories over Lilleshall Sports Centre, Swan Newport and King’s Head B, as per the two-week rule of re-arranging postponed matches. NRBL’s match with Junction B at Norbury was postponed.

Match results should be sent immediately by text message to 07831 123153. Annual pool fees of £30 must be paid now and should be left with results sheets in a clearly marked envelope with bar staff at the Railway Tavern.
