THE MEN BEAT THE WOMEN IN SHAKESPEARE DERBY CLASH

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The men stole the bragging rights in the clash between the Shakespeare A and the Shakespeare B in week 14 of the Newport Pool League at Upper Bar. Andy Potter, Dan Brennan, Richard Young and Dave Marshall did the damage to silence the normally vocal B team.

Potter showed no mercy in the doubles racks either; an anal display of potting with Sarah Pockock gave the A team a 5-0 lead and Brennan and Marshall made sure there were no fires in the A team camp by beating Kim Rigby and Sam Frost.

Ray Talbot set the Railway Tavern on their way to a potential rout against the lowly Lilleshall Sports Centre at Upper Bar, but the out-of-form away side flattered to deceive. Team rookie Mark Simpson stunned Louis Fudge with some dogged safety play and an excellent pot on the black to level the match.

Ben Longstaff lost a tense third frame against Ben Clewes, who put the home side 2-1 up, but Neil Perkins levelled the scores with a useful three-ball clearance against Anthony Winfield. Complete incompetence by referee Ben Clewes forced the fifth frame to be replayed, after Longstaff had potted the wrong balls to put the visitors 3-2 ahead, but Winfield and Ray Talbot made amends by winning the replayed fifth frame.

A tense sixth frame between Perkins and LSC skipper Dave Price and Ben Seals and Clewes ended with Perkins holding his nerve to seal the frame and clinch a deserved draw for the visitors.

Tibberton’s Sutherland Arms maintained their title challenge with a useful 5-1 victory at the Junction B. But they were unable to overhaul the stubborn Royal British Legion Club, who saw off stubborn resistance from the Swan in Newport.

The defending champions dropped one frame on the way to a comfortable win. Colin Pink, Paul Trevor, Anthony Heathcote and Mick Beech did the damage in the singles matches.

Hyla Marklew’s Junction A side made a mockery of their indifferent early season form to trounce the young Audco SC side, 5-1, at Norbury. Gerard Price’s legendary pre-match team talk failed to stop the Navy Club crashing to a home defeat to the in-form Navigation, who maintained their shock title push.

The Navigation beat Audco SC, 4-2, in a late result from last week and the Wheatsheaf were held to a 3-3 draw by the King’s Head A. The result of the match between the King’s Head B and the New Inn was unavailable at the close of press.

Match results should be sent immediately by text message to 07831 123153. Annual pool fees of £30 must be paid now and should be left with results sheets in a clearly marked envelope with bar staff at the Railway Tavern.
