NRBL CLOSE THE GAP ON THE SUTHY TO ONE POINT

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Newport Royal British Legion moved back to within a single point of the Sutherland Arms Tibberton at the top of the Newport & District Pool League with a 5-1 victory over the New Inn.

The Sutherland Arms were forced to fight hard for a point in a deserved 3-3 draw against Lilleshall Sports Centre, which extended the former bottom side’s unbeaten run to four games.

Tom Fisken put the home side 1-0 to the good, but Ian Roberts benefited from a mistake by Matt Mansell to level the scores. Gary Bolton went in off on the black against Ben Longstaff to give the away side the advantage, but Jon Hooper won a tight fourth frame encounter to level the scores.

Jenny Dandy teamed up with Mansell in the fifth frame, but a crucial Dandy miss handed Dave Price the opportunity to give the away side the lead. The crucial sixth frame could have gone either way, but a misjudgement on pace and a black in off pot by Ian Roberts handed Bolton and Hooper the lifeline and honours were shared in Tibberton.

The Swan at Newport missed out on the chance to go top after being held to a 3-3 draw at the Junction A in Norbury. Steve Roycroft and Sian Richards set the home side on their way, but Fox veteran Sean Finney and Gareth Thomas managed to squeeze into Ian Mason and Keith Rogers to level the scores.

Stuart Morrey and Dan Upton put the away side in sight of an excellent win until Junction skipper Hyla Marklew and Richards sealed the sixth frame and the draw in the final frame against Dave Hartshorne and Thomas.

The Railway Tavern slumped to a shocking defeat against the Navy Club. Raymond Talbot plumbed new depths against Mark Kijuk, only for Ben Seels to level the scores. Louis Fudge gave the Railway an unlikely advantage, but the Navy Club were not to be denied. Alan Pritchett, Gerry Nunn, Kijuk, Jez Price and Pritchett completed one of the biggest upsets of the season in the subsequent three frames.

The Shakespeare A cruised past King’s Head B after dropping just one frame. Laura Brennan, Sarah Pocock, Andy Potter and Dan Brennan won the match in the singles racks, but Louise Anyon and Maggie O’Brien restored some pride for the away side by winning the final frame.

The King’s Head A fared much better against the Shakespeare B side, although the 6-0 score line flattered to deceive, according to King’s Head skipper Mick Collins. The visitors had chances in all the frames, but singles victories for Jamie James. Ian Perry, Phil Emery and Collins did the damage.

In the remaining two matches of the evening, the Wheatsheaf moved up to a heady fifth and continued their resurgent form with an excellent 4-2 victory over the youthful Audco SC side and the Navigation beat an out-of-sorts Junction B side, 5-1.

All match forms are to be delivered to the Railway Tavern in Newport and match results sent immediately by text message to 07831 123153.

Annual pool fees of £30 must be paid by the end of February and should be left in a clearly marked envelope with staff at the Railway Tavern. All outstanding matches that were postponed because of the winter snap MUST also be played by the end of February. Points will not be awarded for matches played after this point.
