DAVE PRICE STEERS LSC TO FIRST POOL LEAGUE WIN

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Dave Price inspired Lilleshall Sports Centre to their first win of the 2010 Newport & District Pool League season and enabled the former league title contenders to climb off the bottom of the table.

An inspired six-ball clearance by Price against Laura Brennan set LSC on their way and debutant Ian Roberts made it 2-0 by beating Richard Young. Andy Potter took advantage of two in-offs by Neil Perkins to make it 2-1 to the home side at a raucous LSC and Dan Brennan somehow came back from the dead to snatch the fourth frame from Marcus Thomas to level the scores.

But the home side were not to be denied. Price and Thomas managed to squeeze past Potter and Sarah Pocock to make it 3-2 and Roberts and Perkins prevailed against the Brennan duo in a nip and tuck sixth frame to seal the three points.

The Sutherland Arms at Tibberton maintained the league lead, despite being held to a 3-3 draw by the plucky New Inn. That was largely as a result of the Railway Tavern snatching an excellent 3-3 draw at Newport Royal British Legion, in a match where the Tavern were arguably the better side and skipped Ben Clewes was furious that the Upper Bar side had not taken all three points.

The Swan moved up to second in the league with an excellent 4-2 win against the Navigation and the young Audco SC side posted a similar score line against the Navy Club.

Mick Collins’s King’s Head A side have made a miserable start to the season, but they have hit some form of late and Junction B were the fall guys at Norbury, as the Chetwynd End team clinched a fine 5-1 win. In the final match of the night, Hyla Marklew’s Junction A side claimed their first win of the season at the expense of the ladies’ King’s Head B team.

The Shakespeare B were thrashed by the Wheatsheaf at Upper Bar. Nigel Sandbrook missed the pack completely during his break and still somehow managed to beat Kim Rigby to set the Chetwynd Aston side on their way. Sam Frost edged Chris Cooper to level the scores, but wins for Alan Harvey and Paul Skitt set the ‘Sheaf up for a useful three points. Ian Trevor joined the fray in the doubles to ensure that the away side claimed a vital win.

The King’s Head endured mixed fortunes in a pair of late results from last week. The A team came back from two-one down to beat the Swan, but the B team lost by a similar 4-2 score line to the Navigation in Gnosall.

All match forms are to be delivered to the Railway Tavern in Newport and match results sent immediately by text message to 07831 123153.

Annual pool fees of £30 are now due and should be left in a clearly marked envelope with staff at the Railway Tavern. All fees must be paid by the end of February.
