HONOURS SHARED IN KEY POOL CLASH

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Newport Royal British Legion (NRBL) were held to a 3-3 draw by Mick Collins’s King’s Head side at Chetwynd End, but the high-fliers maintained their three-point lead in the 2009/2010 Newport & District Pool League.

Collins got the better of Mick Beech in their singles match and the home side prevailed in the doubles to cost the defending champions their first points of the season. The Sutherland Arms were held to a 3-3 draw at Steve Whitlock’s Navigation in Gnosall and squandered their chance to move joint top of the league with NRBL.

The young Audco stars hammered King’s Head B to surge up the table to eighth. Ross Richards-Jones, Mikey Lowe, Richard Anthony and Luke Elwell did the damage in the singles and there was no way back for the King’s Head’s ladies team in the doubles racks.

LSC gained their first point of the campaign after sharing a six-frame thriller at the Navy Club. Dave Price put the visitors 1-0 up, only for Navy skipper Gerard Price to level the score.

Ben Longstaff edged LSC back in front, but Alan Pritchett potted some useful long balls on his way to levelling the match again. Honours were shared in the exciting doubles matches, which will be remembered for many months more for three howling misses on the black by Gerry Nunn, Neil Hazeley and Neil Perkins.

Honours were also shared in the clash between the Junction A and Shakespeare A at Norbury. Sion Richards put the home side one up, Hyla Marklew made it two and Keith Rogers looked to have set the Norbury side set up for their first win of the season when he beat Laura Brennan in rack three.

But Dave Marshall managed to beat Ian Mason and give the visitors hope and a superb fight back by Brennan and Marshall netted frame five. Dan Brennan and Andy Potter beat Marklew and Richards in the sixth frame to seal an excellent draw.

The Railway Tavern came unstuck against the high-flying Junction B. The failing Upper Bar side got off to a miserable start, with John Champ and Stu Till sealing the first two frames against Louis Walsh and Anthony Winfield. Ben Clewes hit back to give the home side hope, but Kim Wan Loi was beaten in frame four. Honours were shared in the doubles, but Champ and Till snatched the all-important sixth frame from Clewes and Wan Loi to ‘take away’ the three points.

The Swan recorded a fine 4-2 away win at Shakespeare B. Sean Finney put the visitors on the road to glory, only for Hannah Evans to pip Emily MacPherson to level the scores. Wins for Dan Upton and Gareth Thomas made the score 3-1 to the Swan and Upton and Thomas sealed the three points in the fifth frame by beating Sam Frost and Evans.

The New Inn stunned the Wheatsheaf in the final match of the evening to record a fine 5-1 victory.

All match forms are to be delivered to the Railway Tavern in Newport and match results sent immediately by text message to Neil Perkins on 07831 123153. Annual pool fees of £30 are now due and should be left in a clearly marked envelope with staff at the Railway Tavern.
