NRBL MAINTAIN 100% RECORD IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Newport Royal British Legion (NRBL) maintained their 100% start to the defence of their league title with a 6-0 demolition of new boys Audco SC, the venue from where they began last year’s title campaign.
But Shakespeare A and New Inn kept up the pressure on Andy Lycett’s galacticos, the Upper Bar side beating the Wheatsheaf, 5-1, and the New Inn squeezing a 4-2 win against lowly Shakespeare B.
The King’s Head A were held to a 3-3 draw at Junction A, who maintained their mid-table status with a second draw in as many weeks. The Railway Tavern were also held to a 3-3 draw by Steve Whitlock’s Navigation side, Tavern captain Ben Clewes admitting that the Newport team had missed out on a good chance to stay in the top three.
Lilleshall Sports Centre have used the excuse of missing senior players too many times in the last two seasons and their miserable start to the league campaign continued with a crushing 4-2 home defeat to Junction B. All the damage was done in the singles matches, according to stunned LSC skipper Dave Price.
The Sutherland Arms began their first league campaign in four years with a superb 6-0 win over the Navy Club at Tibberton. They now need to re-arrange the opening week’s fixture against Audco SC to get back on track. The result of the match between King’s Head B and the Swan Newport was not available as we closed for press on Thursday.
