NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE STARTS ON WEDNESDAY (November 11th)
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Fourteen teams will begin their campaign to snatch the Newport & District Pool League title from Audco A on Wednesday night.
The league season runs from November 11th through to July 14th next year, with a two-week gap for the Christmas break. It also incorporates the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy or League Cup, which was won by Shakespeare A this year. The final of the Neil Clark trophy has been set for June 2nd, 2010.
The league retains a similar format this season. Matches will be played on a Wednesday night, with four singles matches and two doubles matches. Three points will be awarded for a win and one for a draw.
Organisers had discussed introducing two divisions the following season, with seven teams staying in a new Newport Pool Premiership and seven being relegated to a Newport Pool Championship. Teams would play each other four times during the season, but both divisions would enter the Neil Clark Trophy. It is hoped that two other teams would enter to give each league eight teams.
This split is still open for discussion because a couple of teams would prefer to stay in one division and not play six teams four times in a given year. The championship co-ordinator Neil Perkins would be happy to hear views on this during the season. A final decision will be made at the start of 2010.
A new rule has also been introduced to cover the eventuality of match postponements, be it through illness, business commitments or major sporting event date clashes.
If a match has to be postponed, it MUST be played within two weeks of the original date or a 4-2 win and three points will be handed to the team who did not postpone the fixture.
All match forms are to be delivered to Ian Roberts at the Railway Tavern in Newport and match results sent immediately by text message to 07831 123153. Entry fees of £30 for the season are now due from all teams.
