WOODHOUSE SENDS PINK CRASHING OUT OF NEWPORT POOL OPEN
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Newport’s Russ Woodhouse stunned Hinstock’s Colin Pink by snatching victory in the fifth frame of a gripping quarter-final of the 2009 Carling Newport Pool Open competition.
Woodhouse, who had already sent Mick Beech crashing out of the competition, produced some solid potting to wreck Pink’s dream of becoming the first player in the competition’s four-year history to win the title twice.
Woodhouse’s reward for a sensational win is a home semi-final tie against the winner of this week’s match between Telford’s Luke Hayward and Stafford’s Brendon Ruttledge.
Defending Newport Open champion, Anthony Heathcote, will play Market Drayton Open champion, Brian Sumner, in the second semi-final. Sumner beat his friend and doubles’ partner Cyril Evans, 3-1, in their quarter-final tie. Both semi-finals must be played by Sunday, October 11th.
Pink and Mick Manning booked their place in the Worthington’s Newport Doubles Open final with a 3-1 victory over Evans and Sumner.
They will play the winners of the clash between Newport’s John Williams and Paul Trevor and Mick Collins and Ed Keenan, with the losers playing a third-place play-off on finals’ night against Evans and Sumner.
The finals’ night for both the Carling and Worthington’s Open competitions will take place at the Royal Navy Club, Bellman’s Yard, Newport, on Wednesday, October 21st. Both the third-place play-offs in the singles and doubles competitions will also take place at the start of the evening.
