CLEWES AND PINK ENTER NEWPORT POOL OPEN LAST EIGHT

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Newport’s Ben Clewes and Hinstock’s Colin Pink were the first two singles players to win their third round matches and qualify for the last eight of the Carling Newport Pool Open.

Clewes dropped the first frame against Ed Keenan in what was expected to be a heated exchange at the Tavern last Sunday lunchtime. But the Tavern league player held his nerve to win the next three frames and bowl Newport’s cricket captain out of the competition.

Pink cruised past Newport’s Anthony Winfield in a 3-0 win at the Legion, as he attempts to become the first player to win the Carling Newport Pool Open on two occasions.

In a delayed second round match, Market Drayton Open champion Brian Sumner dropped a frame against Newport’s Dan Upton on his way to a third round clash against Aqueduct’s Charlie Hayward.

John Digby and Stuart Smith were taken to a fifth frame decider by Irene Whittington and Lyn Woodhouse in a second round Worthington Newport Doubles Open match at the Legion.

All third round ties are to be played by Sunday, September 13th. Results should be sent by text message to 07831 123153, clearly stating the names of players and the score.
