HEATHCOTE HOPING TO MARSHALL HIS WAY
INTO NEWPORT POOL OPEN QUARTER-FINAL
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Defending champion Anthony Heathcote has been given a home draw against Dave Marshall in the third round of the Carling Newport Pool Open.
Former champion Colin Pink faces Anthony Winfield at the Legion, Mick Beech has to overcome Russ Woodhouse, Lilleshall cricketer Andy Potter has drawn Stafford league player Brendan Routledge and Hannah Evans – the sole-surviving female in the singles’ draw – faces a daunting task to overcome Whitchurch’s Cyril Evans.
Sparks are expected to fly when Ben Clewes entertains Ed Keenan at the Railway Tavern, but Richard Priest must overcome Luke Hayward in a delayed second round match before he faces the prospect of a clash with old foe John Williams.
The pick of the Worthington’s Doubles quarter-final draw is the clash between Mick Beech/Colin Farge and Paul Trevor/John Williams at the Legion.
Neil Perkins and Nick Clewley must visit the Legion to take on the in-form Colin Pink and Mick Manning and the Market Drayton Open champion Brian Sumner teams up with Whitchurch’s Cyril Evans to face Dave Marshall and Andy Potter. Ed Keenan and Mick Collins face the winners of the delayed clash between John Digby/Stuart Smith and Irene Whittington/Lyn Woodhouse.
Andy Potter was taken to five frames by Staffordshire’s Keith Rogers before advancing to the last 16 in the Carling singles’ competition.
Hinstock’s Pink and partner Manning sailed through to the last eight in the Worthington’s Doubles Open after demolishing a lacklustre Greg Heathcote and Ben Longstaff in just over 35 minutes at the Newport Legion.
All third round ties are to be played by Sunday, September 13th. Results should be sent by text message to 07831 123153, clearly stating the names of players and the score.
