BEECH, HEATHCOTE AND EVANS SAFELY INTO
ROUND THREE OF CARLING NEWPORT POOL OPEN
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Newport’s Mick Beech defied his critics to stun Stafford county player Will Edge and reach the third round of the Carling Newport Pool Open at the Legion in Newport. Beech dropped just one frame in his 3-1 move into the last 16 – third round draw.
Defending champion Anthony Heathcote disposed of Luke Jones in three straight frames and former champion Colin Pink, from Hinstock, managed to beat his North Shropshire rival Stuart Smith in four frames.
Whitchurch’s Cyril Evans was taken to five frames by Neil Perkins in an 85-minute thriller at the King’s Head. Perkins missed two chances on the black to seal the match, with the second shot leaving the black in play for a valiant Smith to book his place in the last 16.
Newport’s Greg Heathcote was in inspired form in the 2009 Worthington Newport Doubles Open and he and partner Ben Longstaff managed to beat Woodseaves-based Ian Mason and Norbury league player Keith Rogers in three straight frames at the King’s Head.
All remaining ties to date are to be played by Sunday, August 23rd. Results should be sent by text message to 07831 123153, clearly stating the names of players and the score.
