BEECH FACES ‘THE EDGE’ IN COORS

NEWPORT OPEN SECOND ROUND DRAW

Newport Legion’s Mick Beech against Stafford’s Will Edge is the golden tie in the second round draw for the 2009 Carling Newport Pool Open, which sees the surviving 25 players fight it out for a place at the prestigious finals’ night in October.

Other picks from the draw include defending champion Anthony Heathcote’s tie against Luke Jones and Colin Pink’s home match against Stuart Smith. The highlight of the second round draw for the Worthington’s Newport Doubles Open is the match between Pink and Mick Manning and the winner of the delayed clash between Staffordshire’s Keith Rogers/Ian Mason and Newport’s Ben Longstaff/Greg Heathcote.

All second round ties are to be played by Sunday, August 23rd. Results should be sent by text message to 07831 123153, clearly stating the names of players and the score.

There were several tight games and upsets in first round matches. Mick Beech, Irene Whittington, Ed Keenan, Graham Tigwell, Brendan Routledge, Luke Hayward and Keith Rogers were members of a small group who sailed through to round two quite comfortably, but John Williams was taken to a fifth rack by Nick Clewley at the King’s Head, only to benefit from a foul on the black by his opponent.

Former champion Colin Pink survived a nervy hour against Ben Longstaff, who looked to be on top in the deciding frame until he opted to clear one of his own balls away from a pocket and the decision let Pink back into the match.

Mick Collins was a clear favourite to beat Neil Perkins at the King’s Head, but he went in-off on the black in frame one and Perkins benefited from his good fortune to seal the remaining two frames in the upset of the round at Chetwynd End. Jack Jones had excellent chances to beat Stuart Smith, but he fouled on the black in the final frame and Smith sealed the win.

Irene Whittington and Lyn Woodhouse came back from two frames down to pip Jack Jones and Tom Sayce in the Worthington’s Newport Doubles Open at the Shakespeare. A reckless black pot and an in-off by Tavern landlord Ian Roberts cost Steve Morrey and himself a possible fifth frame win over James Searles and Andy Richardson.

There were straightforward doubles wins for Mick Collins/Ed Keenan, Neil Perkins/Nick Clewley and Colin Pink/Mick Manning, but Stafford league players, Will Edge and Brendan Routledge, were stunned by a 3-0 defeat at the hands of inaugural singles’ champion Paul Trevor and snooker supremo John Williams at the King’s Head.
