EDGE AND CLEWES SAFELY INTO ROUND

TWO OF COORS NEWPORT POOL OPEN

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Stafford’s Will Edge and Newport’s Ben Clewes were the first players to book their places in the second round of the 2009 Carling Newport Pool Open.

Edge crushed local hot shot Greg Heathcote in three straight frames at the King’s Head to book his place in round two, while Clewes dropped a rack on his way to a 3-1 victory over Shakespeare league player Don Brenan at Upper Bar.

Edge delivered a classy performance to push aside young Heathcote, who had nothing but admiration for the Open debutant’s play. “If he carries on with potting and positional play like that, then he is sure to feature at the business end of the tournament,” said a disappointed Heathcote.

Defending champion Anthony Heathcote cruised into the second round, when the Tavern’s Steve Morrey withdrew from the competition after the first round draw had been made.

The majority of the first round matches in both the Carling Newport Open and the Worthington’s Newport Doubles Open will take place in the next two weeks, with a closing date of July 27th set aside for all first round matches to be played.

All matches will be played to Newport Pool League rules over the best of five frames at a venue to be decided by the home player. The away player must make contact with the home player to decide the date and time of the match.
