AUDCO A CLINCH NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE TITLE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Audco A clinched their second successive Newport Pool League title with a 5-1 win over the Navy Club at Bellman’s Yard.
Paul Trevor sealed the crucial pot to seal the necessary points, although Scott Smith and Gerry Nunn saved the home side’s blushes by salvaging a doubles frame to stop the rout. With the exception of Andy Lycett and Trevor, the ‘Newport Galacticos’ now head into the Coors Newport Open to try their hand in the singles and doubles tournaments.
Junction A’s late challenge for the runner-up spot came off the rails at the Shakespeare, where they were held to a 3-3 draw by the much-improved Newport side. Sion Richards got the visitors off to a useful start by beating Paul Burton and Keith Rogers edged Hazel Ford-Lewis to make it 2-0.
But Hannah Evans stunned the usually-consistent Ian Mason to give the home team a chance and Carl Fletcher levelled the score against Steve Roycroft. Honours were shared in the doubles racks, with Burton and Fletcher sealing the unlikely draw after Rogers and Mason had put the visitors on course for the win in the fifth frame.
Wrockwardine Wood Football Club maintained their challenge for fourth place with a useful 5-1 win at the Navigation in Gnosall. Shakespeare A edged Junction B, 4-2, at Norbury and the Wheatsheaf were held to an entertaining 3-3 draw by the Railway Tavern. The King’s Head were handed a walkover 4-2 win over the Audco B and LSC and Navigation A had byes.
Could the remaining four team captains (Audco A, Shake B, Junction B and Audco B), who have not paid their annual fees, please arrange for monies to be left with Ian Roberts at the Railway Tavern this week.
