AUDCO MOVE TO WITHIN ONE POINT OF NEWPORT POOL TITLE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Audco A moved to within one point of a second successive Newport Pool League title with a 5-1 demolition of the Railway Tavern in a re-arranged match at the Legion. The King’s Head maintained their slim title challenge by beating Lilleshall Sports Centre, 4-2, at Chetwynd End.
Mick Beech got the Audco off to a flying start by ousting Gary Owen and Paul Trevor and Colin Pink dismissed James Searles and Andy Richardson to make it 3-0. Andy Lycett put the result beyond doubt with a win over Ben Clewes, but the Railway restored some pride when Searles and Richardson pipped Beech and Pink in rack five.
Dave Price gave LSC hope with a useful opening frame win against Ian Perry at the King’s Head, but coming back from two fouls against Mick Collins was always going to be a big ask for Neil Perkins and the score went to 1-1. Edd Keenan looked set to be seven-balled by Ben Longstaff, but Keenan hit back with a fine clearance to make it 2-1 to the home side and Irene Whittington survived a few nervy moments to beat Neil Hazeley.
Longstaff and Price gave the away side hope in rack five, but Perry confirmed the win with a fine pot and a useful clearance in the final doubles match.
Shakespeare B go marching on and this week’s victims were the Navigation A. Scott Podmore put the home side 1-0 up against Hannah Evans, but Hazel Ford-Lewis and Kim Rigby hit back to make it 2-1. Navigation landlord Steve Whitlock levelled the scores in rack four, but the Shakespeare won both the doubles matches to seal all three points.
Shakespeare A were held to a 3-3 draw by Navigation B, despite lending the Gnosall side a player. Peter Dickinson put the Gnosall side 1-0 up, only for Andy Potter and Laura Baker to put the Upper Bar side into a 2-1 lead with wins over Sam Brewer and Anthony Cox. Up stepped loan player Ed Seabury for the Gnosall side and he managed to win his frame to level the scores. Honours were shared in the doubles.
Wrockwardine Wood Football Club thrashed Audco B 5-1 in Telford, but the former league leaders had to call upon Neil Morris to come out of retirement for support with Luke Jones and Craig Hutchinson unavailable. The Wheatsheaf beat the Navy Club, 4-2, in the final match of the evening.
Could the remaining four team captains (Audco A, Shake B, Junction B and Audco B), who have not paid their annual fees, please arrange for monies to be left with Ian Roberts at the Railway Tavern this week, as the league co-ordinator needs to arrange end-of-season awards.
