AUDCO CLOSE IN ON SECOND NEWPORT POOL TITLE

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The King’s Head’s shock 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Railway Tavern gave Audco A an excellent chance to put one hand on a second successive Newport & District Pool League title.

The Railway Tavern demolished the lacklustre King’s Head side, who can now only score 58 points from their remaining four matches.

Audco A crushed Junction B, 5-1 and have a vastly superior frame difference to their rivals. They also have a five-point league lead and three games in hand and now need just seven points from an available 21 to confirm the title.

The Junction A continued their late challenge for second place in the league with a 5-1 victory over failing Audco B – the early season league leaders. Only Jack Jones managed to win a frame for the Newport side.

The Junction A now head into their final four fixtures a mere four points behind the King’s Head, although the beaten Neil Clark Memorial Trophy finalists do have a better frame difference.

The Shake B ‘Belles’ continued their impressive recent form with a 4-2 victory over the inconsistent Wheatsheaf at Chetwynd Aston. The result lifts the former strugglers to within a point of the Navy Club and a creditable 11th position in their first season in the league.

“We’re on a bit of a roll at the moment,” enthused team spokeswoman Hazel Ford-Lewis. “I suppose it’s come a bit late in the day to challenge for the title though!”

Steve Whitlock’s Navigation A got the better of their B team in an all-Gnosall encounter, the A team winning the match 5-1.

A hand injury for Shakespeare A captain Richard Young and a couple of absentees forced the home side to postpone their fixture against Lilleshall Sports Centre, who now have five games in hand over some teams in the league and still need to play the table-topping Audco A on two occasions.

Could the seven team captains (King’s Head, Audco A, LSC, Shake B, Railway Tavern, Junction B and Audco B), who have not paid their annual fees, please arrange for monies to be left with Ian Roberts at the Railway Tavern this week, as the league co-ordinator needs to arrange end-of-season awards.
