Honours shared in crunch Newport Pool League clash

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The King’s Head were held to a 3-3 draw by Junction A at Chetywnd End, during the 23rd week of matches in the Newport & District Pool League.

The King’s Head duly closed to within two points of the table-topping Audco A, who have two games in hand heading into the final few weeks of the league season.

But the highlight of the week was the sporting gesture handed out by the Audco B side to the visiting Wheatsheaf. Since the Audco club re-opened, the B side have been playing home games from the Honeysuckle, although the Wheatsheaf turned up at the old venue for their away match by mistake.

To avoid a heavy rain shower, the Audco B duly sent a couple of their players to Bellman’s Yard in cars to collect the away side and were duly rewarded with a 4-2 thumping by the in-form Chetwynd Aston side!

Chris Cooper, Nigel Sandbrook, Al Harvey and Paul Skitt all won their singles matches to complete the unlikely rout, before the shell-shocked Audco side hit back with victory in both doubles racks. The result moved the Wheatsheaf level on points with Lilleshall Sports Centre – their match against Audco A was postponed.

Both Shakespeare sides have been in good form recently and the A team fought back from 3-0 down against Wrockwardine Wood Football Club to record an unlikely draw.

Kim and David Worrall and Danny Owens put the home side into a commanding lead with wins over Don Brennan, Laura Baker and Andy Potter, but Richard Young beat Luke Hayward to give the visitors hope. Victory in both doubles racks sealed the point.

The Shakespeare B team entertained the neighbouring Railway Tavern at their new upstairs pool venue and managed to earn an unlikely draw. Andy Richardson put the Railway 1-0 up by beating Ade Darrell, only for Carl Fletcher to beat Gary Owen to level the scores.

The Railway Tavern won the next two frames, with Ben Clewes beating Hannah Evans and James Searles pipping Kim Rigby. But the home side hit back in rack five and Hannah Evans sealed the point with a stunning final double on the black that stunned the visitors in the sixth frame.

The Navy Club came away from the Navigation at Gnosall with all three points, courtesy of a useful 4-2 win against the league’s bottom side.

Could the nine team captains who have not paid their annual fees, please arrange for monies to be left with Ian Roberts at the Railway Tavern as soon as possible, as the league co-ordinator needs to begin arranging end-of-season awards.

All match forms are to be delivered to Ian Roberts at the Railway Tavern in Newport and match results sent immediately by text message to 07831 123153.
