HONOURS SHARED IN TABLE-TOP POOL CLASH

NEWPORT (Shropshire): Honours were shared in the table-topping Newport & District Pool League clash between the King’s Head and the Audco ‘A’.

The 3-3 draw meant that the Chetwynd End side were unable to make in-roads into the Audco’s three-point league advantage – despite streaking into a 3-0 lead – and the Bellman’s Yard outfit now look favourites to retain their title.

The in-form Irene Whittington got the home side off to a winning start against Anthony Heathcote and Mick Collins made it 2-0 by pipping Paul Trevor. Ian Perry crushed Colin Pink to give the King’s Head a stunning 3-0 lead, but Andy Lycett came to the visitors’ rescue with a crucial win over Neil Hallett.

The Audco buttoned down the hatches in the two doubles racks and weathered the storm, with Heathcote and Pink disposing of Whittington and Hallett and Lycett and Trevor seeing off Perry and Collins to confirm a valiant draw.

Lilleshall Sports Centre ground out a 4-2 win over the Navy Club at a crowded sports centre, although visiting captain Jez Price got the better of LSC skipper Dave Price in the opening rack. Greg Heathcote was pushed all the way by a plucky Gerry Nunn in the second frame and Ben Longstaff saw off Alan Pritchett in the third frame to give the home side a 2-1 lead.

Neil Hazeley edged the fourth frame to earn the home side at least a draw, but Price and Stuart Weeden were well beaten by Nunn and Mark Kijuk in rack five and the Navy Club could scent a draw.

Longstaff and Heathcote eventually edged Price and Pritchett in a tight encounter to confirm a much-needed three points, but a cruel in-off by Pritchett cost the veteran dearly and LSC were fortunate to claim the win.

An irate Charlie Hayward was awarded all three points at Wrockwardine Wood Football Club, when the visiting Navigation ‘A’ side let him down at the 11th hour and failed to turn up. “They couldn’t get a team for the game. That is all well and good,” said Hayward. “But all the catering was in place and they could have let us know beforehand.”

The Junction ‘A’ cruised into third place in the league with a 5-1 demolition of the cup finalists, Shakespeare ‘A’, while the Shakespeare ‘B’ recorded a useful 4-2 away win at the Navigation ‘B’. The match between the Junction ‘B’ and Railway Tavern was postponed.

Could the nine team captains who have not paid their annual fees, please arrange for monies to be left with Ian Roberts at the Railway Tavern as soon as possible, as the league co-ordinator needs to begin arranging end-of-season awards and cup final trophies.

All match forms are to be delivered to Ian Roberts at the Railway Tavern in Newport and match results sent immediately by text message to 07831 123153.
