TAVERN HOLDS JUNCTION A AT UPPER BAR

NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Railway Tavern held the in-form Junction ‘A’ to a 3-3 draw to maintain their push for the top four, as the Audco ‘A’ recovered from their shock cup defeat to record a 4-2 victory over Wrockwardine Wood Football Club in the Newport & District Pool League.

Andy Richardson got the Tavern off to a useful start with a win over Steve Roycroft, but Hyla Marklew levelled the match by beating James Searles. Ben Clewes stunned Ian Mason in rack three and Gary Owen put the home side in sight of an unlikely win by beating Keith Rogers to make it 3-1.

But the experienced visitors dug deep into their resolve and won both the doubles racks, with Marklew and Sion Richards clinching the point in the final rack with a win over Clewes and Owen.

Mick Beech returned to winning ways after his recent splutter to put the Audco A 1-0 up against Kim Worrall from the visiting Telford side. Luke Hayward conjured an unlikely frame win from the defending Newport Open champion, Anthony Heathcote, and Charlie Hayward rocked the Audco boat by beating a lacklustre Andy Lycett in frame three.

But Colin Pink settled home nerves by beating league debutant “Shab” in frame four and the home side made no mistake in the doubles, with Beech and Heathcote disposing of Worrall and Luke Hayward and Lycett and Pink pipping “Shab” and Charlie Hayward.

The Shakespeare ‘A’ followed up their cup semi-final win with a 4-2 away win at the Navigation in Gnosall. Laura Baker got the visitors off to a winning start, only for Geoff Arrowsmith to level the match by beating Richard Young. Don Brennan made it 2-1 to the away side in frame three and Andy Potter earned the Shakespeare at least a point in rack four by edging Brian Hall. Honours were shared in the doubles, with Baker and Potter clinching the deciding final frame.

The bottom of the league clash between the Junction ‘B’ and Navigation ‘B’ ended in a 5-1 win for the Norbury side. The King’s Head kept up the pressure on the Audco ‘A’ with a 4-2 win over the Wheatsheaf at Chetwynd Aston, Chris Cooper starring for the ‘Sheaf with victory in both his singles and doubles match.

Audco ‘B’ pipped the Shakespeare ‘B’ 4-2 to maintain their push for third place, although Luke Jones and Craig Hutchinson spluttered to a doubles defeat and Hutchinson’s run of poor form continued. An unsavoury incident between the visiting captain and a Shakespeare player ensured that tension was evident during the evening.

The Junction ‘A’ and the Navy Club played both their postponed fixtures last week and the Norbury side took four points from the encounters. They edged the Bellman’s Yard side 5-1 in the home fixture and honours were shared in the away match, with Gerry Nunn and Alan Pritchett cancelling out frame wins for Marklew and Rogers in the second match.

Only Pritchett got on the score sheet in the opening fixture, with Marklew, Rogers and Mason in rampant form.

Could the nine teams who have not paid their annual fees, please arrange for monies to be left with Ian Roberts at the Railway Tavern, as the league co-ordinator needs to begin arranging end-of-season awards and cup final trophies.

All match forms are to be delivered to Ian Roberts and/or Dave Wilkinson at the Railway Tavern in Newport and match results sent immediately by text message to 07831 123153.
