WHEATSHEAF HELD AT HOME AS AUDCO MARCH ON
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Wheatsheaf were held to a 3-3 draw at Chetwynd Aston by the Shakespeare A side, in a mid-table clash during the 18th week of matches in the Newport & District Pool League.
Don Brennan got the visitors off to a great start by beating Al Harvey, but Chris Cooper levelled the score with a win over Richard Young. Paul Skitt made it 2-1 to the home side by beating Marcus Toogood, but Laura Baker maintained the tit-for-tat format of the match and rocked Nigel Sandbrook to make it 2-2.
Honours were shared in the doubles racks; Hodgkinson and Sandbrook beat Brennan and Toogood, but Young and Baker were in excellent form to edge Cooper and Skitt and force the draw.
Wrockwardine Wood FC were also held to a 3-3 draw at the Navy Club. Alan Pritchett put the home side one up by beating Dave Worrall, but the Telford outfit hit back with Luke Hayward seeing off Denis Holland. James Good beat Gerry Nunn to make it 2-1 to the visitors, but Scott Smith levelled the match with a win over Charlie Hayward.
Navy Club skipper Jez Price sprang to the rescue and teamed up with Pritchett to put the home side within sight of victory in frame five, but the Hayward father and son duo steadied the Telford ship and forced a draw in the final rack.
Audco B returned to form after their recent slump with a 4-2 victory at the Navigation B in Gnosall. Ashley Grant stunned Craig Hutchinson in frame one and put the league’s bottom side 1-0 up, but Jack Jones, skipper Luke Jones and Tom Sayce hit back with a vengeance to see off Anthony Cox, Sam Brewer and Steve Taylor and put the Bellman’s Yard team within sight of the three points.
Grant and Taylor made sure that the Audco nerves were frayed in frame five with a win over Jack and Luke Jones, but Liam Matthews and Sayce came to the former league leaders’ rescue and sealed the three points in the final frame.
Audco A extended their league lead to five points with a hard-earned 5-1 win over high-flying Junction A, the score line flattering to deceive. Mick Beech steamrollered his way through Steve Roycroft to put the home side one up and Paul Trevor and Andy Lycett disposed of Sion Richards and Keith Rogers to make it 3-0.
But Ian Mason – last year’s Newport Pool Open semi-finalist – forced a vital frame win over the in-form Colin Pink to give the visitors the slim hope of a shock draw. Trevor and Beech sealed the three points by beating Rogers and Mason in a marathon frame five and Lycett and Pink sealed the rout by beating visiting skipper Hyla Marklew and Richards in the final frame.
Lilleshall Sports Centre’s visit to Norbury to play the Junction B was postponed because of illness and business commitments, while the Railway Tavern were granted a 4-2 walk-over win against the absent Navigation A.
All match forms are to be delivered to Ian Roberts and/or Dave Wilkinson at the Railway Tavern in Newport and match results sent immediately by text message to 07831 123153.
