WOODHOUSE STARS IN KING’S HEAD ROUT AT LSC
NEWPORT (Shropshire): King’s Head debutante Lynn Woodhouse was the surprise star in a 5-1 rout for the Chetwynd End team against a woeful Lilleshall Sports Centre in the Newport Pool League.
Replacing Ian Perry, who was attending a stamp fair in London, Woodhouse joined the King’s Head line-up for the first time and the visitors adapted much better to a shocking playing surface. Brain fade after his break saw home skipper Dave Price attempt to pot a wrong colour on his second visit and this handed Mick Collins the driving seat from then on. It was soon 1-0 to the visitors.
Irene Whittington and Neil Hazeley were embroiled in a marathon frame of a shocking standard to decide the second rack. Hazeley missed two shots on an easy black and Whittington managed to extend the visitors’ lead. Neil Hallett squeezed past Neil Perkins to make it 3-0, when the home player left a safety shot five inches short, but the hapless Nick Clewley was stunned by rookie Woodhouse, as the King’s Head sealed the three points in the singles matches.
Perkins and Clewley restored some pride for the home side by beating Collins and Hallett in the first doubles match, but Stuart Weedon and Price dithered and dallied in frame six and Woodhouse and Whittington were on hand to seal the 5-1 win and keep the King’s Head in the title hunt.
Audco B stayed on the coat tails of leaders Audco A with a useful 4-2 win over Wrockwardine Wood Football Club at the Honeysuckle. Luke Hayward got the visitors off to a cracking start by beating Jack Dicken, but Tom Sayce levelled against Dave Worrall, only for Kim Worrall to oust Jack Jones and put the visitors back in front. Luke Jones’s win over Charlie Hayward in frame four ensured that the doubles frames would be crucial with the match poised at 2-2.
Sayce and Liam Matthews pipped Luke Hayward and Kim Worrall in the fifth rack and Luke and Jack Jones sealed the points with a useful performance in the final frame.
The Wheatsheaf remain the dark horses for a top three league finish after sneaking a 4-2 win at the Navy Club. They have only lost one league game this season, although Ian Trevor was the weak link for the Chetwynd Aston side.
After Chris Cooper had beaten Dennis Holland to put the visitors 1-0 up, Trevor fell to Gerry Nunn, but Al Harvey and Nigel Sandbrook put the ‘Sheaf back in command with wins over Alan Pritchett and Scott Smith.
Pritchett and Holland beat Cooper and Trevor to make it 3-2, but the visitors overcame last frame nerves to clinch the match, with Harvey and Sandbrook beating Nunn and Smith to secure the three points and the dizzy heights of sixth in the league.
Junction A came out as 4-2 winners in the all-Norbury clash against Junction B, while Navigation A won 4-2 against Shakespeare B at Upper Bar and moved up to fifth.
Shakespeare A were awarded a 4-2 walk-over win against Navigation B, when the Gnosall side were unable to field a full team.
All match forms are to be delivered to Ian Roberts and/or Dave Wilkinson at the Railway Tavern in Newport and match results sent immediately by text message to 07831 123153.
