AUDCO ‘A’ AND KING’S HEAD CLOSE IN ON TITANIC DUEL
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Audco A and King’s Head sides maintained their challenge for success in this year’s Newport Pool League Cup for the Neil Clark Memorial Trophy, after convincing quarter-final wins.
With the shock news that the Audco Sports & Social Club had closed its doors for the last time over the weekend, both Audco pool sides were left needing to find a home for the remainder of the pool league season.
The Audco B chose the Honeysuckle as the venue for their home cup tie against the in-form King’s Head, but Jack Jones and his team could not have envisaged the punishing 6-0 defeat that they would incur. Every game was closely-fought, but the King’s Head strolled into the semi-final draw at a canter.
League-leading Audco A were drawn away at Wrockwardine Wood Football Club and found themselves 1-0 down after just a few minutes. The previously-unbeaten Mick Beech fell to young Luke Hayward to set the Telford side on their way. But Paul Trevor, Colin Pink and Andy Lycett had other ideas and wins over Dave and Kim Worrall and captain Charlie Hayward put them in the driving seat.
The contest was settled in the visitors’ favour when Pink and Trevor disposed of Charlie Hayward and Dave Worrall in the first doubles match and Jon Mason joined Mick Beech in the final rack to complete the 5-1 win.
The Shakespeare ‘A’ side managed to squeeze past Gnosall’s Navigation A in a tense quarter-final tie at Upper Bar. Both sides had their chances to win, but the home side eventually edged the match, 4-2.
The fourth quarter-final clash between the Wheatsheaf and Lilleshall Sports Centre was postponed until Friday, February 20th. LSC only had two players available on the night, with three absent through work commitments and one still nursing a broken wrist.

Wheatsheaf v Lilleshall Sports Centre, postponed
