AUDCO ‘A’ MARCH ON IN NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The Audco A maintained their relentless quest for a second successive Newport Pool League title by bulldozering Junction B into submission with a 6-0 thumping at Norbury.
Terry Taylor had no answer to Mick Beech’s heavyweight potting and Stu Till fell to Paul ‘The Pigeon’ Trevor, as the away side went 2-0 up. Jon Mason and Colin Pink sealed all three points with wins over Sonia Taylor and John Owen and Lycett joined the rout in the doubles to seal all three points for the Audco side.
Lilleshall Sports Centre’s title dreams came off the rails three weeks ago and Dave ‘Bezza’ Price’s captaincy was again called into question after a below-par home performance. Last year’s beaten cup finalists were held to a 3-3 draw by the inconsistent Shakespeare A.
Price and Nick Clewley had the dreaded ‘L’ against their names after losing to Richard Young and Andy Potter, but Neil ‘Hurricane’ Hazeley and a resurgent Ben Longstaff restored some pride for the home side with wins over Laura Baker and Don Brenan and the match headed into the doubles’ racks at 2-2.
On a shocking playing surface at Lilleshall, Price and Clewley completed their losing double by falling to Potter and Brenan, but a holiday in Barbados seemed to have put new wind into Longstaff’s sails and he and Hazeley dug deep to secure a point in the final game of the match.
Early season leaders Audco B stumbled to a 3-3 draw against the Junction A at Bellman’s Yard. Home games for the young side remove the need to arrange travel to away games, although they still have the record for taking five cars to an away match after a dispute about who was going to drive!
The Wheatsheaf enjoyed a raucous evening at the Shakespeare, but still managed to take a 4-2 win against Shakespeare B and continue their climb up the league table.
Steve Whitlock’s Navigation A sealed a comfortable 5-1 win against the Gnosall pub’s B side and the King’s Head cruised to a similar win over the Railway Tavern, a woeful display by Ian Perry costing the Chetwynd End side a whitewash. The King’s Head did move up to second place in the league, however.
All match forms are to be delivered to Ian Roberts and/or Dave Wilkinson at the Railway Tavern in Newport and match results sent immediately by text message to 07831 123153.
