AUDCO B AND LSC STAY TOP OF NEWPORT POOL LEAGUE
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Audco B and Lilleshall Sports Centre maintained their joint lead and unbeaten starts to the new 2008/2009 Newport & District Pool League season, with 4-2 away wins over the Junction B and Shakespeare B sides.
The Audco romped into a 4-0 lead at Norbury, by winning all the singles matches, but a couple of unusual pairings in the doubles potentially cost the Bellman’s Yard side both of the remaining matches.
Controversy marred LSC’s win against the ladies’ team at the Shakespeare.
Dave Price, Nick Clewley and Greg Heathcote won three of the singles matches, but Ben Longstaff was crushed by landlady Hazel Lewis to keep the home team’s hopes alive. "I’ve been beaten and bruised into retirement," groaned Longstaff, who is yet to get off the mark in the singles this season.
Honours were shared in the doubles matches, but a refereeing row developed, when Heathcote was accused of making several poor decisions by a partisan and heckling home side. A heated exchange followed and a disgruntled Heathcote failed to stay behind for the team debrief, but it didn’t stop LSC claiming the three points.
Audco A leapt back into contention for the league’s top spot with a 5-1 win over Shakespeare A, the only upset coming for the full-strength champions when a speechless Dave ‘Mash’ Marshall rocked newly-crowned Newport Open champion Anthony Heathcote in one of the singles’ matches.
Honours were shared in the match between the Wheatsheaf and Wrockwardine Wood FC at Chetwynd Aston. The home side went 3-1 down, but stormed back to win both the doubles matches and share the points. The King’s Head maintained their 100% start to the new season with a 5-1 away at the Navy Club.
The Junction A beat Navigation A in a close-fought encounter at Gnosall and the Railway Tavern dodged the local agricultural students at a packed home venue and returned to winning ways with a 4-2 victory over Navigation B.
All match forms are to be delivered to Ian Roberts and/or Dave Wilkinson at the Railway Tavern in Newport and match results sent immediately by text message to 07831 123153.
Team registration is £30, including automatic entry into the Neil Clark Memorial Cup, and fees must be paid by the start of December and left with Ian Roberts at the Railway Tavern for the attention of Neil Perkins.
