FOR COORS POOL OPEN SHOWDOWN
NEWPORT (Shropshire): The draw for the quarter-finals of the 2008 Coors Newport Pool Open has pitched tournament favourite Andy Lycett against the Junction’s Keith Rogers at the Audco.
Snooker player John Williams faces Gnosall’s Ian Mason, while Anthony Heathcote must overcome Ed Keenan to reach the last four. Ian Perry or Gnosall landlord Steve Whitlock await the winner of the delayed Mick Collins/Luke Hayward clash to complete the last four.
Last year’s beaten semi-finalist John Williams coasted past Bob Perry in straight frames, the Audco snooker player taking less than 20 minutes to dismiss the youngster in their last 16 match.
Keith Rogers survived a huge scare against Stuart Morrey at the Tavern. Rogers raced into a 2-0 lead and looked for a whitewash, but Morrey dug in with some excellent pool to level the match, only to see Rogers hang on and book his place in the last eight.
Stuart Morrey was granted a walk-over win over Neil Hazeley, who was prevented from playing because of business commitments.
Both Mick Collins and Ed Keenan were granted a walk-over win over Ben Clews and Matt Hestor in the Worthington’s Doubles Open, as the away side could not arrange the fixture in time to meet the necessary deadline. The King’s Head duo will now face Paul Trevor and John Williams this week to finalise the last semi-final place.
The winners will meet defending champions, Andy Lycett and Anthony Heathcote, in the semi-finals, with the honeymooning Ben Longstaff and Greg Heathcote facing Ian and Bob Perry on newly-wed Longstaff’s return from his world tour.
