COLIN SEES PINK TO OUST
FORMER CHAMPION TREVOR
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Defending Coors Newport Pool Open champion Colin Pink managed to squeeze past former champion Paul Trevor in a fascinating second round encounter at the Audco and continue his undefeated run in the singles.
The pair were evenly matched at 1-1 after over an hour of cunning safety play, but Trevor opted to take a less than obvious colour when he was handed two shots by Pink in the third frame and left himself out of position to clear the table.
The next few shots were cat and mouse, but Pink managed to edge into the lead and held his nerve through the fourth frame to seal the win and avenge his doubles defeat by Trevor and John Williams the previous week.
Tournament favourite Andy Lycett coasted into the last 16 of the singles with a 3-1 win at Wrockwardine Wood against Dave Worrall, while an in-form Anthony Heathcote dropped only one frame on his way to a 3-1 win against Jack Jones at the Audco.
Dark horse Keith Rogers shattered Dave Wilkinson’s championship aspirations in straight frames at the Junction to book himself a place in the last 16. Wilkinson never got into his stride and suffered the ignominy of knocking the black into the pocket by mistake in the final frame.
Charlie Hayward and Kim Worrall won the all-family affair in the Worthington Newport Doubles Open by beating their sons in straight sets to enter the last eight. They will be joined by last year’s beaten finalists, Ian and Bob Perry, who beat Neil Cartwright and Ian Fearnley in four frames.
All remaining ties are to be played by Wednesday, August 27th and
