WORRALL UPSETS CLEWLEY AS
ROGERS AND PERRY FLY HIGH
NEWPORT (Shropshire): Young Dave Worrall upset the fancied Nick Clewley in a five-frame thriller in the first round of the 2008 Coors Newport Open at Lilleshall Cricket Club and moved through to the second round, where he will be joined by the Junction’s Keith Rogers and Newport’s Ed Keenan.
Rogers went one frame down against Tavern landlord Ian Roberts, but managed to edge into the lead. Roberts levelled the match and was playing well in frame five, when he put the white in-off and enabled Rogers to clear his final two balls and the black to clinch the match.
Keenan was also taken all the way by a buoyant LSC league skipper Dave Price. Price snatched the first frame, but ‘conker’ Keenan hit back and the match went to a decider, with Price having his own chances to book a passage into round two.
Ian Perry made no mistakes in taking out the Navigation’s Peter Dickinson in straight frames, although it was the Gnosall player’s first taste of Open competition.
Andy Dean dropped one frame in beating Muxton’s Kim Worrall and Paul Trevor achieved a similar result against Charlie Hayward at the Audco. League team mate Anthony Heathcote only needed three frames to beat the Junction’s Mick Ashforth.
Ben Longstaff and Greg Heathcote survived an early scare in the Worthington’s Newport Doubles – when Heathcote inadvertently potted the black – to edge through against Tom Sayce and Luke Jones at the Audco.
Ian and Rob Perry were forced to go all the way to the fifth frame to beat Ian Roberts and Steve Garmson in a marathon contest at the King’s Head. Last year’s third-place finishers, Ian Fearnley and Neil Cartwright, continued their good run of form with a 3-1 win over Dave Price and Neil Hazeley at the Tavern.
